Margaret McCauley b 1879 d 1938 JOHN HENRY LUCAS John H Lucas, one of the few local surviving veterans of the South African War, died suddenly at the some of his nephew, Calvin Lucas, Queen Street, West Ward, early Tuesday morning. Mr Lucas had been a semi-invalid from the effects of rheumatism for the past twenty-five years, but he had been able to get about the house with the aid of crutches. On Tuesday morning Mrs. Calvin Lucas had taken his breakfast into his room on a tray and when she went back for the dishes some time later found Mr. Lucas dead lying across the bed. He had eaten his breakfast and dressed himself ready for the day when he apparently been stricken. 'Jack' Lucas was born in St. Marys on February 10 1880, the son of the late Richard Lucas. As a young man he worked for his father around the town and at the old Curling Rink and in 1900 together with the late Huck Peart, Tom Rigglesford, Caleb Brown and Keg Graham and William Brown, who are still living, enlisted for the Boer War as troopers in the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles, then training at the Ottawa Fair Grounds. Later that year they left Halifax via troopship to land at Capetown, South Africa thirty-two days later. After going to the front in the Orange Free State via DeAAr and Blomfontein, Mr Lucas served with the mounted rifles for more than two years, the latter part on police duty as trooper in the South African Constabulary Force. He returned to Canada in 1902 and later married Margaret McCauley, who predeceased him some ten years ago. Mr. Lucas was for years the Ontario car license issuer here. He was a member of the St. Marys Branch, Canadian Legion. Surviving he leaves two sons and two daughters, Reg of St. Marys, Lloyd of London, Miss Berniece Lucas of Victoria, B.C., and Ilene, now Mrs. A.J. Ausk, of San Diego, Cal., also one brother Albert Lucas of London, and one sister Agnes, Mrs Chas. Lewis, West Ward. There are two grandchildren. William Harrison Reid b June 5 1858 d December 5 1930 Richard and Elizabeth's eldest daughter Mary Ann lived in London, Ontario, most of her life, after her marriage to William Reid, having 3 children. They were married in Chalmers Presbyterian Church in London although they met in St. Marys. Mary is mentioned in the 1871 British census as a scholar and then again in the Canadian census in 1881. She served as a mid wife as her family remembers her saying many times that there were few children ever born there in that area near Victoria Hospital at whose birth she was not present. William was born in Devon, England but lived in St. Marys as a child and left school at age 11 to assist the family budget which was quite the usual instance in those times. He worked for the Grand Trunk Railroad in London in the yard. One incident relates him having crushed his foot in the yards and having to be taken home pushed by two co-workers in a wheel borrow. The eldest child was Violet Elizabeth born November 6, 1884 and died in February 1971. Violet married Harry Evans who owned his own machine shop in London. In his early years he worked on the Grand Trunk in St. Marys, moved for a better job in Hamilton for a short while, then took up residence in London at McClary's foundry in the 'uptown' plant then later transferred to the 'downtown' plant on Adelaide Street. Here he served as head machinist. He started his own business in 1928. Violet worked at the Featherbone where poultry feathers were cleaned and the quills used in various lady's clothing. She had broken her hip and suffered from this for many years walking with a cane. She never talked about it much unless you asked but she was always determined and had a strong will. In spite of this she was someone who was well liked. They had two sons. Harrison worked much of his life in the Hardware business, owning his own store and also managing Canadian Tire stores. Reid worked for his dad as a salesman then came into the office and took over the business as his father eased into retirement. Ethel May Reid was born February 13, 1886 and died January 19. 1968. Before she was married she worked as a supervisor with the Bell Telephone Co., in London. On October 27, 1915 she married Charles Sidney Ireland who was a chiropractor on Dundas St., in downtown London. He died July 26, 1963. Charley first worked as a barber then decided to attend Palmer Chiropractic College in Chicago. The youngest, Maude Estelle Reid was born November 15, 1887 and died March 31, 1908, the cause of her death was pneumonia. Charley Ireland dated her before her death and spent many hours standing on a box outside her window in the Old Colborne section of Victoria Hospital. 1st Elizabeth Bristow b August 8 1841 d March 8, 1902 2nd Geraldine Constance West b ? d ? Came Here 55 Years Ago (St. Marys Journal Argus, December 4, 1930) DEATH OF LATE RICHARD LUCAS BROUGHT TO A CLOSE A LONG AND ACTIVE CAREER-- WAS FIRST CARETAKER OF THE ST. MARYS ICE RINK A great many of our readers will be sorry to learn of the death of Richard Lucas, who for fifty-five years has been a resident of St. Marys and during that time had up until a few day before his death been active in body and mind. Mr Lucas, it will be remembered by the older generation, was the first caretaker and ice maker at the St. Marys curling rink and for over twenty-five years he continued to care for this building. He was also foreman of the corporation workmen for a great many years and at the time the town water works was installed he had charge of the laying of the mains. As a result of the knowledge gained at that time, Mr Lucas was often called upon to give advice, especially as to the location of mains and drains even up until the last few days. He was also a charter member of the A.O.F. The late Mr. Lucas was a native of the town of Pointon in the County of Lincolnshire, England, where he was born on July 4, 1843. As a young man, or to be exact just 67 years ago, he married Elizabeth Bristow of his native Pointon and some twelve years later he and Mrs. Lucas came out to Canada in company with their family of five children. They came direct to St. Marys where they established a home that was enduring until the present day. Mrs. Lucas passed away on the 8th of March, 1902, and since that time, Mr. Lucas has had the loving care and attentions of his daughter Agnes (Mrs. Charles Lewis). Despite the fact that he was well advanced in age, the late Mr. Lucas had been active almost until the last and never a fair went past but he was present in the hall with a display of his fine walking canes, the product of his skill made entirely from bone or horn. He is mourned by a family of three sons and three daughters, namely: Mrs. Wm. Reid , London; Mrs D. W. Kelly, Detroit; Mrs. Chas. Lewis, St. Marys; George of Detroit; Albert of London and John of this town. Four other children, Mrs. Philip Mitchell, Mrs. D. Saundby, Richard and William, predeceased him some time ago. The pallbearers were five of Mr. Lucas' grandsons. Reginald, Lloyd and Calvin Lucas of St. Marys, Richard Lucas, St. Thomas; Nelson Mitchell, St. Marys and Wm. Mitchell of Detroit. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. McClung of the Baptist Church, of which church Mr. Lucas was an adherent. Picture of the Town Hall and new Water Works: The photograph opposite was taken in the fall of 1899, the year that the first town waterworks was installed. The streets were dug up with ditches into which miles of iron pipes were laid and the ditches filled in again. The stone and steel water tower was built, and steam pumps were installed in a new stone building at the St. George Street electrical generating plant. For the first time, the St. Marys Firemen did not have to rely solely on the old steam fire engine and the water from the river, but could draw water under high pressure from the town mains. Willis Chipman, a Toronto engineer, was responsible for the waterworks project, and Richard Lucas was the local supervisor of the town men. Here, we see several businessmen watching jets of water shooting through the air as firemen demonstrate the force of the new system. To the rear of the Town Hall can be seen the market shelter, and the burned-out building to the right is the shell of the British Hotel. It was perhaps this fire at a building so close to their new quarters that convinced the town council to initiate the waterworks project. Parents: Walter Lucas and Mary Brown. He was married to Elizabeth Bristow on Mar 7 1864 in Parish of Aslackby, Lincolnshire, England. Mr. Lucas who is a son of Mr. Richard Lucas, Salina Street, St. Marys, was in his usual health during the morning and after eating a hearty dinner he retired to a couch in his home for a short rest, where he expired without a previous warning. The news of his death came as a great chock to his father and brother here. Mr. Lucas was born in St. Marys but has been a citizen of London for over twenty years, he lately being an employee of the McClarys foundry. Her husband Dan was raised not too for from St. Marys close to the Middlesex-Oxford border. It is expected that they followed her sister Sara to Detroit and possibly George as well to acquire work. One child is know of this marriage, a daughter named Muriel. Muriel married and one daughter is known of that marriage. From that point on we lose track of the family. They do not appear to have been returned to the St. Marys area for burial as were Sara and George.
