Celestine M Gibson b September 15, 1880 d December 29, 1949 St. Marys Journal-Argus Thursday October 26, 1922 A Well Known St. Marys Resident who passed away Late on Wednesday Last following a Prolonged Illness Citizens were shocked on Wednesday last when the news of the death of Thomas William Lucas, a life-long resident, was made known. The deceased, who was forty-two years old, had for years been troubled with a weak heart, and during the forepart of the present year had been confined for the greater part of the time in his bed. Mr. Lucas conducted a harness business on Water Street for a number of years and later was engaged as driver for the Dominion Express Company, which position he held until his recent illness. He is survived by his wife and four children: Gibson, of Detroit, and Eleanor, Calvin and Edward at home, also his father, Mr. Richard Lucas and four brothers-John, of St. Marys, Albert and Richard, both of London and George of Detroit. Three sisters also survive-Mrs. A Lewis, St. Marys; Mrs. Reid, of London, and Mrs. Kelly, of Detroit. The funeral was held on Friday afternoon. Interment being made in Lakeside cemetery. Many friends and relatives were present from out of town and many beautiful floral offerings were received. In Thursday March 3, 1910 St. Marys Journal page 6 an add appearing in the paper from Grandfather advertising his Leather Shop TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC Go to Lucas with your harness If its broken anywhere He makes a special effort Of attending it with Care Now his tank for oiling harness Ought to do a business stroke When our harness is unfastened You can leave it there to soak His tugs for heaving harness Have been made to stand a test With any other firm From here to the North West His stock of leather is alright The way it has been tanned And every stitch that you behold Has all been done by hand I now conclude with many thanks For custom that is past I hope and trust for many years That this will also last. AT SEMPRINGHAM ABBEY for Walter Lucas 1800 - 1874 Easy to feel this as a kind of holy ground, lost down the end of half-forgotten lanes, far from the nearest house or road. The planes concede this summer evening's air to birdsong. So little trace is left behind now, of St. Gilbert and his English monks and nuns. The place had nothing of Cistercian grandeur, with almost everything gone back to farmland - cloister and dorter drowned under acres of the rolling wheat. Only this small church, run aground from storms. Wrecked and repaired, it looks out east across the edge of fenland, over the misty distances where nothing else will rise as high this side of Scandinavia - as if still waiting for a tide that can release it on some last soul-freighted voyage, far to sea. But I have my own reasons to come stepping softly in among these stones. True, I did not expect to find your name inscribed on any of them. Only substantial farmer's bones would justify carved slate. Maybe a wooden board once stood with name and date on one of those plain plots behind. This boundary wall, whose stones you often mended, lobouring for extra shillings, stands as your best memorial today. They raised a thousand pounds from earls and royalty for the remaking of the church, in your old age. No one, of course, took notice of a simple parish clerk among the dignitaries on Dedication Day. People still use the cemetery - have fixed new gates and doors, but not the bits of coping from your wall that once again have come away. I nearly missed the 'holy well', that brims in a neglected corner. No thoughtless tourist come, to waste cheap coinage in the crystal waters. Did you ease your labours, drinking of its purity? A small sign claims it is 'chalybeate'. It has an iron taste. I chance a mouthful, praying - for what? for continuity, our mutual peace? Farming goes on, though two or three men, driving from the nearest town, could quite well work these fields today. Life in the countryside uncouples now from church and fields. I too have grown long-rooted in the city. Only may something, lingering, speak still of who you were, and who we are, before I walk the mile you must have walked so often, back to the village and my waiting car.
