Obituary of Reverend Robert McIntyre
The Canadian Baptist page 2 column 3 March 5 1885 McIntyre--Died, on the 15th of October, 1884 after a protracted illness of four months duration, The Rev. Robert McIntyre departed this life at his residence in Glenelg, in the 68th year of his age. Bro. McIntyre was a native of Mull, Argylshire, Scotland. At the age of eighteen he was baptized by the late Rev. Grant of Tobermory, under whose preaching he came to the knowledge of the glad tidings of salvation. Having the evidence within himself that he was called of God to preach the Gospel to his fellowmen he at once set to work with the ardor and firm purpose which ever after characterized his labors, to exercise and develop the talent given to him. Thus he continued faithfully in the Master's service for five years in his native land. In 1847 he was united in marriage to a Miss Catherine McDonald, and in 1853, with his young family emigrated to Canada and settled in the Township of Glenelg, near Priceville, County of Grey, Ontario, while yet the country round about was in its primeval state and but sparsely settled. Here, in common with the original settlers in the vicinity, he met with and experienced most of the hardships incident to a pioneer's life. While he commenced hewing out of the forest a home for himself and family, he felt that there was still a work for him to do in the vineyard of the Lord; therefore he began again to proclaim the unsearchable riches of Christ to his fellow countrymen in their vernacular tongue--preaching exclusively in the Gaelic language. He was a man remarkable for his close communion with God and power in prayer, and for his earnestness and eloquence in his exhortations, and although it could not have been said of him that much learning made him mad, yet he was mighty in the Scriptures, glorying in preaching Christ and him crucified as the only hope of salvation. The Bible and the Bible alone was his text-book and creed. About 1860 he was ordained to the full Gospel ministry by the late Rev. Alex Stewart of Durham, and the late William Frazer, then of Kincardine, in connection with the Regular Baptist Church, and became the Missionary of the Home Mission Convention of Ontario on the extensive field embracing the townships of Egremont, Proton, Artemesia, Glenelg and Bentinck. In the early years of his ministry the people flocked to hear him preach, not in Churches like the palatial piles of our day, but in the old log school-houses and in barns yes even the hillsides and banks overlooking the River Saugeen often echoed the song of praise and the voice of prayer. A great number were converted and baptized on the profession of their faith, and it is reasonable to believe that many more were convicted and convinced although they never came out publicly on the Lord's side. Bro. McIntyre was not carpet soldier of the cross, buttoned in cloth and gloved in kid, but an ordinary man of God abundant in labors, instant in season and out of season advancing the cause of the Master. He travelled on foot and in the saddle many a weary mile, for many a weary year, over roads that were not noted for their smoothness in those days and so punctual was he that seldom, if ever, he failed to fill an appointment but our departed brother served his day. He fought a good fight. He finished his course and without a murmur or a struggle obeyed the summons calling him to his eternal home. According to his own statement more than once, his faith stronger and stronger and his love more and more ardent as his strength failed him and his body wasted and ripened for the grave. With his soul-refreshing experience, he entered that blest rest and eternal glory awaiting the people of God. Although the widow and large family that survive him are sorrowing under this dark cloud of bereavement, missing his presence and counsel, yet they have reason to rejoice in the fir hope that their loved one entered into the joy of his Lord, there to reap his high reward through eternity. The solemn, comforting and consoling remarks of the Rev. D McLeod, B.A., Presbyterian minister, who preached the funeral sermon, and the very large concourse of friends, neighbors, and acquaintances who assembled to impart their last tribute of respect in following the remains to its last earthly resting place, combined in giving an impressive expression of the sympathy felt for the bereaved family in the community. May they seek the Kingdom of Gad and His righteousness that they may all live the life of the Christian and die the death of the righteous. C, McA. March 12 1885 Canadian Baptist Person Note: In an obituary notice of the last Rev, Robt. McIntyre, which appeared last week, the word 'late' appeared before the name of Rev. Alex Stewart, of Durham. Mr Stewart very properly object to any such prefix. So far from being a candidate for anything which 'late' may signify, he is in good health, and vigorously prosecuting his ministerial duties. May the time be far off when this devoted missionary must lay down his work. Robert McIntyre was born on the Isle of Mull and being converted and was baptized by the Rev. Grant of Tobermory, Islay. He seemingly emigrated to Canada with a young family & wife in 1853. He was a circuit preacher covering the Townships of Proton, Egremont, and Artemesia. Canadian Baptist Register 1860 In 1861 he also preached to the Highland Scotch settlers in the Township of Egremont, preaching in Gaelic. C B R 1861 It seemed that in 1865 he also preached in a chapel in the Village of Priceville. The Baptist Church was situated north of the Commercial Hotel, on the north part of Lot 5, Kincardine Street, North. The church was made of logs. Long after his death a new brick church was built on the same site in 1921. It seems that Reverend Robert McIntyre was baptized by the late Rev. Grant of Tobermory, Mull Tobermory 'Well of Mary' Gaelic meaning This town was in the Parish of Kilninian & Kilmore District of Mull County of Argyll Lots 46,47,48,49 Concession 3 S.D.R. Lots 48 and 49, Concession 3 S.D.R. have always been in the McIntyre name--for four generation. In the 1850's the Reverend Robert McIntyre was a Baptist minister in Priceville. His wife was Catherine McDonald. In 1846 he preached at Aberdeen, Bentinck Township at the home of Huch McLean. He either walked or rode on horseback from Priceville every Sunday. His pay was a bag of oats for his horse or a bag of flour for his family. The services were preached in Gaelic. The first buildings were of log and they stood until 1879. The stone house that was built then is still standing today. They had a family of 12. Jim, Robert, Dora, Alex, Margaret, Katherine, Flora, Minnie, Jeanette, Dan, Sara, and Norman. In 1909, the farm was taken over by their son Norman and his wife Janet McEachern. They had a family of Robert and Annie Mae (Mrs Jack MacMillan). In 1948 the farm was taken over by their son Robert and his wife Jean Mather. They had a family of eight--twin girls Mary and Ruth, Kenneth, Linda, Glen, Anne, Keith and Larry. Also in 1948 they took over Lots 24 and 25, Concession 4, formerly the McPhail farm, and in 1960 they bought Lots 46 and 47 Concession 3, known as the McDonald farm In 1978 their son Kenneth and wife Sue McIntyre took over the farms. They have one son Bradley and are the present owners This is taken from 'History of Glenelg Township' pg 322 A BAPTIST CIRCUIT RIDER PRICEVILLE AND ITS ROOTS ROUTES page 7 In 1865 a long church was built on Part Lot 5, Kincardine St. North, in the village of Priceville. Reverend Robert McIntyre was the minister. Reverend McIntyre preached in Gaelic. During the Revival of 1877--78 over 100 converts became members of this church. Reverend McIntyre was a powerful speaker. Reverend McIntyre was a real pioneer. He trained his own steers for oxen to use in tilling the soil. A story was told that a couple of settles of the era were very doubtful that anyone could train oxen without using an oath. So they hid and listened until they were satisfied it could be done, and the trainer was worthy of his calling to fill the pulpit. A young couple walked into Reverend McIntyre's farm house on Lot 48, Concession 3 S,D,R, and asked him to marry them, which he did, and they walked on. A little while later the parents walked up the road and asked Rev. McIntyre if he had seen the young couple. And his answer was,"I married them". So they walked on and caught up to the young couple in Priceville. Reverend McIntyre preached in Aberdeen Bentinck Township. He either walked or rode horseback every Sunday. His pay was a bag of oats for his horse or a bag of flour for his family. At the time of the Revival he baptized Mrs. Charles McKinnon, her stepson Lauchie and John Burnet Sr. by cutting a hole in the ice on the Saugeen River on Lot 9, Con. 2 S.D.R. on Mrs. McKinnon's birthday March 10, 1878.
