She was the First white child born at Lakeside and for many years one of its best known residents.
Another of the old pioneers of this district has passed on in the person of Mrs. John Gibson, who died on Sunday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Lucas, St. Marys, after a long life of 86 years, all of it spent in close intimacy with the development of this district from its earliest days. Born on October 27 1834, she was the first white child of Lakeside, having first seen the light of day in an old log house where the Lakeside station now stands. She was one of a large family of children of the late Charles Mitchell, well-known as one of the first settlers in this section of the country. Her mother was Eliza Parker, Methuen, Mass, cousin of the famous poet John Greenleaf Whittier and Mrs. Mitchell was, in fact, born in the same house as the poet. The late Mrs. Gibson was for many years one of the best-know residents of Lakeside, where her kindly spirit and sterling worth left a deep imprint on all with whom she came in contact. She was prominent all her life in the Anglican church, in which she was a devoted worker. In politics she was known as a Conservative. She was married first to Mr. James Clark of Lakeside, and subsequently to the late Mr. John Gibson, of St. Marys, who is remembered as a prominent Oddfellow in the early history of St. Marys. It was in August 1892, that Mrs. Gibson left Lakeside, after a residence there of fifty eight years and came to St. Marys. Her death leaves behind a number of brothers and sisters, a son and two daughters; Charles of Virgina; Mrs. William Webster, of Springfield, and Mrs William Lucas of St. Marys. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon to Lakeside cemetery, private service being held at the house by the Rev. C. K. Masters, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Blankley. Passed away Friday afternoon March 26, 1971 at Saginaw General Hospital after a lingering illness. Age 73 years, Myrtle M. Mitchell was born December 24, 1896, in Bay County and had lived in Saginaw most of her life. She was married to John D Lucas May 15 1924 in Saginaw. He passed away June 7 1969. Surviving are one sister and two brothers, Mrs. George D. O'Leary, Bridgeport; George Mitchell, Milwaukee; Edward Mitchell Stanfield, Ariz; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place 2.30 p.m. Tuesday at the Frank R. Chilson Funeral Home. Rev. Asa T. Compton will officiate with burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Brigeport. Friends may call at the funeral home 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.
