DEATH OF S.H. MITCHELL
A Resident of this Section for Nearly eighty years - A Pioneer in Religious Work

In the Passing of Mr. S.H. Mitchell on Sunday, a life rich in noble purpose and in helpfulness to his fellow man was brought to a conclusion at a ripe old age. Mr Mitchell was a resident of St. Marys for half a century and during all that time an earnest Christion worker, He was one of the founders of the St. Marys Baptist Church and for 46 years superintendent of the Sunday School. He was a man of considerable natural ability and although he received as a youth only the scant advantages of the early pioneers of the country he made the most of his opportunities and in later years did considerable writing. A few years ago he published a small volume recounting incidents in his early life in the primitive community which settled in this district sixty and seventy years ago.
In his chosen occupation of gardener, Mr. Mitchell had considerable success. He was constantly experimenting in plant culture and evolved among other things the well known 'Canadian VIctor' tomato. Mitchell's Perfected Corn is also a variety originated by him.
Mr. Mitchell was born at Honlton, Lancashire, England in 1830. His parents, the late Philip and Mary Mitchell, immigrated to America the following year and settled about half a mile south of Woodstock. There was a fair-sized family and as a lad Mr. Mitchell had to bear his share of the hardships of life in the rued wilderness. In 1852 he bought a lot in the Township of Urborne. The journey from Woodstock to Usborne, which was undertaken by oxcart, was a difficult one. Mr. Mitchell in his reminiscences thus describes the village of Little Falls (St. Marys) as he saw it on his trip:-
Wednesday at noon we reached the north branch of the Thames river, called at that time Little Falls. Here water fell three feet over the rock and as there was plenty of water then, it was a pretty sight: and the roar of the water could be heard several miles in calm weather. The fall has since been destroyed by the stone being quarried out. It was a sad mistake that so pretty a fall was permitted to be destroyed. A village was situated here and the name afterwards changed from Little Falls to St. Marys. It was situated in a hollow on the east side of the river, with but one street and that a mud hole. Five yolk of oxen stood in the mud with five heavy oxsleds attached to them. Although it was summer these sleds slipped along fairly well, sometimes floating, and sometimes slipping through the mud. The sleds could be drawn through the woods to the settlers' shanty, where a wagon could not be drawn. All that could be seen in the village at that time was a grist mill, saw mill, an hotel, a few log houses and two or three small stores.
The following year Mr. Mitchell went farming in East Nissouri, near the Brown's settlement. Shortly afterwards he was married to Miss Jane Ceary of East Nissouri. Seven years later in 1860 he came to St. Marys and established the gardening business at present carried on by his son William. In 1863 the St. Marys Baptist church was organized. Mr Mitchell was one of the organizers of the body and a year or two later along with his brother John, became a deacon of the church. In 1886 he was chosen superintendent of the Sabbath school, a position he held honorarily right up to the time of his death. Mr Mitchell was an active worker in the church from its establishment and in his broad sympathy assisted whenever possible with Christian work of every description.
Five daughters and two sons survived to mourn the loss of a kind father. They are : Mrs. Gould, Mrs. Barrett, Mrs. Seaton and Mrs. R Eades of St. Marys; Mrs. J.B Martin of East Nissouri; Philip and William of St. Marys.
