On Sunday morning, January 31st, Mrs. Charles Mitchell of Lakeside passed away in the 94th year of her age. Mrs. Mitchell came to Lakeside in the Year of 1827 and was the oldest resident of East Nissouri. She was a sister of the late Presbyterian minister, Rev. O. Parker of Flint, Michigan and a near relative of the Poet Whittier.
The above poet referred to is John Greenleaf Whittier
Born December 17 1807 Died September 7 1892

This is also a clipping from the Journal under the heading
People We Know
A Short Biographical Sketch of the Oldest Resident of the District
I know not a more beautiful spectacle in the world than an old man or woman who has gone with honor through all the storms and contest of life and who retains to the last the freshness of feeling that adorned the youth. This is true green old age--this makes a Southern winter of declining years, in which the sunlight warms through the heats are gone--Bulwer.

Mrs. Eliza Mitchell
Sixty-one years ago this month there came to reside on the 12th concession, East Nissouri (Lakeside), the lady who is in all probability, the oldest resident in this or the surrounding district. The lady is Mrs. Eliza Mitchell, who, in February, celebrated her 93rd birthday. She is a first cousin of the poet, J.G. Whittier, and wears the honor of having been born in the same house as the great American poet; and here in her babyhood days she played around the "clean-winged hearthstone of the rude-furnished old kitchen" with its white-washed walls and sagging beam, and toddled in her bare feet to the little brooklet of which in later years Whittier wrote
"Laughed the brook for my delight
Through the day and through the night
Whispering at the garden wall
Talked with me from fall to fall"
In her early years the property changed into the hands of the Whittiers, her mother's family. Her paternal grandfather, John Parker, also her father, Joseph Parker, were soldiers in the Revolutionary War
and contemporary with General Washington. The mother died when Eliza (Mrs. Mitchell) was but seven years of age.
They moved to Danville, Vermont, and afterwards to Jefferson Co. N.Y., where they settled in the town of Henderson, Near the shore of Lake Ontario. Mrs. Mitchell first attended school in Danville, Vermont, her teacher being her cousin, Patty Morrill. She also attended school in Henderson, N.Y. She was married in the City of London, Ont., in 1827, to Charles Mitchell who came from England to America when he was four years of age. They first settled in Zorra 68 years ago and afterwards came to Lakeside. Mr. Mitchell had been dead for a number of years. Their family consisted of five Sons and four daughters, the greater number of whom are still living; two of the daughters in the Town of St. Marys, namely: Mrs. Gibson, Wellington St. North and Mrs. Prudy, James St. East, Edward lives at Comber, Miss Marinda Mitchell in Oswega Co. N.Y.: Malcolm in Bay City, and Marshall on the 11 concession, East Nissouri.
The Journal correspondent visited Mrs. Mitchell at her home, a short time ago and spent a pleasant hour with her. She is totally blind, but retains all her other faculties in a surprising degree for one of her age. She seems a cling between the present and the past, and relates incidents which happened many years ago, with the greatest accuracy. Seeing and hearing her brings to mind the quotation "'Tis strange that a harp of a thousand strings should keep in tune so long". She lives with her son and daughter Mr. Mortimer and Miss Maria Mitchell, and their tender care of their aged mother and their solicitude for her comfort is pleasant to witness, bringing to mind the words of the poet:
"And can't thou mother for a moment think
That we, thy children, when old age shall shed
Its blanching honors on thy weary head,
Could from our best of duties ever shrink?
Banish the thought, where'er we roam,
Still will fond memory point to thee and home."
Mrs. Mitchell had been a Methodist for many years. We might here add that the Rev. Orson Parker, a brother of Mrs. Mitchell was for many years a noted revivalist and mission preacher of the Presbyterian denomination in the United States. He was the author of a very interesting book entitled "Revivals and how to promote them, or The Fire and the Hammer"; also a short biographical sketch of the Parker family. He located in Flint City, Mich., where he died several years since. While visiting his sister, Mrs C. Mitchell at Lakeside many years ago, Mr. Parker preached in Nissouri; and his stirring and eloquent address will ever be remembered by those who heard him.
