He held various official positions in Haverhill and he was a member of the council seven times between 1656--1687. In civil and religious matters he early took a stand for liberty of conscience and Freedom of worship. He was also a good friend of the Indians and also of the Quakers. He had a high regard for civil duties. They are buried in the family ground near the Whittier Home. They died in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
