THIRD GENERATION
19. Wayne David LYONS
was born on
31 May 1895 in Wellman, Washington Co., Iowa. He died on 26 Aug 1957 in Tacoma,
Pierce Co., Washington.(21)
(34) After wife Agnes died, Wayne (known as Dave by most) moved into
the back of his fix-it shop. He had been cared for by a "nurse" because
of suspected heart and other problems and been taking various types and amounts
of medication. At the time of Agnes' death, it was discovered that he had hidden
a large sum of money in a shoe box under his bed. (He had taken it out to pay
the doctor who came to see Agnes while she was bed-ridden at home. The doctor
was concerned and suggested to Dave's son, Forrest, who was visiting there at
the time, that the family should try to get Dave to put the money in the bank.
Dave refused. He was found dead in his repair shop at 3517 McKinley. All traces
of the medicines had been removed from the premises, the money was gone, and
so was the nurse. He was buried on 27 Aug 1957 in Mountain View Memorial Park,
Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington.(35) Wayne
is buried next to his wife Agnes. His headstone is engraved with a lion and
the inscription: "Lion's Den."
Wayne David held a variety of jobs throughout his life, from construction worker
to being a chef at the restaurant at Mt. Rainier. He was a talented, self-taught
musician, who played a number of instruments, including the guitar, violin and
piano. A talented artist, he especially loved to do charcoal drawings of the
mountains of western Washington. Despite his "colorful" background,
and the family problems he seems to have caused, he is fondly remembered by his
grandchildren, who only met him in the final years of his life, as a doting grandfather
who entertained them with his home-made wooden toys, and created colorful and
unusual weather vanes and whirligigs, bird houses, and other wooden creations.
He presented them with bicycles he assembled at his shop, with sleds for winter
fun, and told them stories of his pranks as a young adult in Aberdeen. He was
married to Effie Fern LABRIE (daughter of Edward Evan LABRIE
and Cora Jane Ernestine COLBY) on 22 Apr 1920 in Vancouver,
Clark Co., Washington.(36) According
to Wanona Poe, Effie's daughter by her prior marriage to Valdemar Mendenhall,
Wayne's divorce from his previous wife had not become final (unbeknownst to Effie)
at the time of this marriage. Effie did not learn that fact until sometime later,
and although she could have voided the marriage, she chose not to. Wayne married
three times while living in Portland, and after his divorce from Effie, married
a school teacher in Spokane, Washington, who eventually tried to have him committed
to the state mental hospital. He finally married Agnes, who predeceased him
by several months.
Effie Fern LABRIE(21)
was born on
31 Aug 1895 in Mapleton, Cass Co., North Dakota. She died on 25 Feb 1957 in
Aberdeen, Grays Harbor Co., Washington. Effie suffered a stroke at home, and
it is not known how long she lay paralyzed before being found. She was hospitalized
for recovery, but had other small strokes. It had been planned that son Forrest's
family would care for her on her release, and had obtained a hospital bed, and
prepared a room for her in their home. Prior to her discharge from the hospital,
however, she suffered another major stroke and died. She was buried on 27 Feb
1957 in Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen, Grays Harbor Co., Washington.
(21)(37) Funeral services were
conducted at the Elerding chapel, with the Rev. C Carlton Peters officiating.
Originally interred in grave, Effie's body removed to a vault on the exterior
of the Mausoleum next to Wanona's daughter, Lynnda Poe, who had died in 1971
following a motor vehicle accident. Effie's father, Edward Evan LABRIE, was
the son of Joe LABRIE, a Cree Indian probably from Canada, and Effie Estella
TRUE. The history of the True family in America has been documented by Charles
True and a copy of it is in the possession of Allen Lyons. Effie Fern LaBrie
Lyons was not proud of her Indian heritage and so reported for her father's death
certificate that his place of birth had been Paris, France! Effie's mother,
Cora Jane Ernestine THOMPSON, was descended from the PUTNAM family of New England,
tracing their lineage to Charlemagne. A history of the Putnam family, in several
volumes, is also in the possession of Allen Lyons. Wayne David LYONS and Effie
Fern LABRIE had the following children:
+54 i.
Wanona Maxine MENDENHALL.
+55 ii.
Lyonal David LYONS.
+56 iii.
Donald Morrill LYONS.
+57 iv.
Forrest Ward LYONS.
