SECOND GENERATION
5. Garrett A. LYONS
was born on
18 Mar 1869 in Daytonville, Washington Co., Iowa. Army enlistment records list
his place of birth as "in or near Daytonville, Washington County, Iowa."
Daytonville is about 1.5 miles from the Iowa County line, and the 1880 census
lists the birthplace of all of David and Elizabeth's children as Iowa County.
He died on 23 Nov 1932 in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon.
(18) His death was on Thanksgiving day, and he was discovered by brother
Sherman who lived nearby. The cause of death is listed as "angina pectoris,
with contributing arterio-sclerosis." He was buried on 25 Nov 1932 in Columbia
Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon. The cemetery is located in the St.
Johns area of North Portland near Interstate highway 5. The burial was provided
for by Garrett's brother Sherman. The headstone reads simply "Garrett A.
Lyons - Brother." He served in the military 11 Aug 1888 to 19 Dec 1888
in Wellman, Iowa Co., Iowa. Garrett worked principally as a farmer in Iowa.
On moving to Oregon, he had various jobs, last working in a veneer plant. He
was a retired carpenter. He was married to Theresia Katherine LANZ (daughter
of Gebhardt LANZ and Magdalena ABERLE)
on 15 Oct 1890 in Washington, Washington Co., Iowa. Garrett and brother Sherman
eloped to Washington, Iowa with sisters Theresia and Barbara Lanz. The marriage
was performed by a Justice of the Peace. Theresia Katherine
LANZ
was born on
11 Oct 1872 in Richmond, Washington Co., Iowa. She was baptized on 24 Nov 1872
in Richmond, Washington Co., Iowa.(19)
(20) Although baptized Catholic, she
married outside the church and never again practiced the faith. According to
son Maynard, at one time before leaving Iowa, she tried to have the children
baptized Catholic, but Garrett learned of the plan and prevented it. She died
on 22 Jul 1925 in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon.
(21)(22) Theresia died of starvation
as a result of ingesting lye 5 weeks before in a suicide attempt. The sons blamed
their father for driving their mother to the suicide attempt and the family became
estranged after Theresia's death. She was buried on 24 Jul 1925 in Rose City
Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon.(21)
Her grave is beside that of her daughter Jenny. The epitaph on the common
monument reads: "The End of a Perfect Day." The surname also spelled
Lantz in certain records, and the 1880 Census spells her first name "Teresa."
