THIRD GENERATION

14. Grant Alvin HALL (25)(26) (12) was born on 11 Aug 1880 in Dorchester, Saline Co., Nebraska. He died in Gardena, Los Angeles Co., California. He was buried in Green Hills Memorial Park, Palos Verdes, California. (12) Grant was only about two years old when his mother left with his younger sister Emma. Raised by his father and Mary Ellen Murray (his mother's cousin who had come from Ohio to help with the children), he ran away from home at age 14 with his brother Roy and got a job shucking corn.

Grant was reported to be a gentle, quiet and friendly person. In his early 20's he enrolled in Nebraska Normal School, graduated, and then taught school in Hiawatha, NE. While teaching, as was the custom in those days, he lived with the Ruggles family. They had a daughter, Edith, in the first grade. Little did anyone know that someday Grant would marry little Edith.

While teaching, Grant became acquainted with an older student, Edith Summers. They married and moved to Yakima, Washington. There Grant got a job as a postal carrier. The following year, Edith died of consumption.

Grant married a second time, to Minnie Christine Fontaine of Yakima. They had a daughter, Edna Marie, and a son, Cecil Alvin. Minnie died sometime around 1914 of what they called the plague, probably the flu. Grant took the children and moved to Roseville, California. There he again took a job as postal carrier.

In 1935 Grant returned to Nebraska to visit family and friends. He stopped at the Ruggles house and was reacquainted with his former student, Edith, now 36 years old, never married, and living at home. Some months later she would move to Roseville where she and Grant were married. A daughter Lucille Annette was born to them 17 September 1938.

Grant had always dreamed of being a farmer, and his dream finally came true. He had a three acre farm with some cows, chickens, rabbits and large gardens. He lived there with his family until 1946.

The family next moved to Gardena, California where Edith's sister lived.

Edna, Grant's daughter by Minnie, married Chester Haines at age 16, and they had three children: Kenneth Grant, Joyce Marie and Iris Lydia.

Grant's son Cecil, by his marriage to Minnie, married Geneva ________ and they had five children: Terrance, Maureen, Dennis, Colleen and Patrick. All married and have children of their own.

Lucille attended Junior College in Gardena, and there married Jim Strumpfer on 8 November 1958. They had two children, a daughter Laurel Annette, and a son Wayne Kevin. Laurel married John Motz and had two children, Andrew John and Daniel James. Wayne married Maureen McKennon.

Lucille and her husband lived in Gardena, California until 1964, then moved to Torrence, California. In 1969 they moved to Santa Rosa, California, where they raised their children. In 1987 they moved to San Diego, California, where they would live for the next two years. They then settled in Folsom, California in 1989.
