FOURTH GENERATION

57. Forrest Ward LYONS Photo was born on 20 Feb 1925 in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon. (40) He was born at 10:15 a.m. at Wilcox Maternity Hospital, the only child of Wayne and Effie to be born in a hospital. At birth he weighed 8 pounds, 4 and one half ounces. He was baptized on 28 Mar 1937 in First Christian Church, Aberdeen, Grays Harbor Co., Washington.(41) The Rev. R.N. Olson performed the service. He died on 15 Sep 1974 in Elma, Grays Harbor Co., Washington.(21) Forrest died of a heart attack while away from home visiting friends near Elma Washington. He, Marie, son Steven (and family) and son Forrest had gone for the weekend to the river-front summer home of friends. Forrest complained in the night of "indigestion," and got up to go downstairs to the bathroom, where he collapsed and died. He had a long history of atherosclerosis, and had surgey for that condition while in his mid 30's. In June of 1974 he had surgical replacement of the aorta, from the heart to its branching at the legs, and had appeared to have made a quick and successful recovery. He had returned to work and was quite active up to the time of his death.

He was buried on 19 Sep 1974 in Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen, Grays Harbor Co., Washington. He was educated 1941 to 1943 in Weatherwax High, Aberdeen, Grays Harbor Co., Washington. In high school Forrest was known as a talented singer and actor, and was on the track team until he fell ill with scarlet fever, which ended his participation in the sport and may have contributed to his eventual heart problems.

He graduated from high school in June, 1943, and reported to Seattle, Washington on 3 July 1943 for a physical exam prior to induction into the Army. He served in the military 1943 to 1946. Forrest was inducted into the United States Army at Fort Lewis, Washington, 17 July 1943, slightly more than a month after graduating from high school. He was sent for basic training to Camp McQuaid, California, where he was assigned to Battery "A" of the 104th Training Battalion. Thirteen weeks later he was assigned to Headquarters Battery, Fourth Battalion, at Fort Barry, California, with an off-shore detachment of the coast artillery. He eventually served in Germany, both in Munich and Nuremburg, where he was commissioned an agent in the Army's Criminal Investigation Division. He was discharged 17 May 1946, and returned to California, where his wife Marie was now living with her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret (RAND) and Lloyd MURPHY. The couple later resided at 810 Liberty Street in El Cerrito, California. Through his mother, the family traces its history through the Putnam family to Charlemagne.

He was engaged on 18 Sep 1943 in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor Co., Washington. (42) The Aberdeen Daily World of that date reported that

"Mr.and Mrs. Fred Rand of Aberdeen announce the engagement of their daughter, Marie Catherine, to Pvt. Forrest Lyons, son of Mrs. Effie Lyons, also of Aberdeen. No date has been set for the wedding.
"Miss Rand, who is a senior at Weatherwax high, has just returned from a six weeks' trip to Oakland, where she visited her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Murphy.
"Pvt. Lyons was graduated with the 1943 class of Weatherwax high school and is taking basic training at Camp McQuaide in the coast artillery."

On 27 October 1943, Marie was given a surprise engagement shower by Miss Sharon Shay and Miss Georgia Mercier (who would become the mother of Marsha Loraine DeBay, later to be the wife of Allen Ward Lyons, eldest son of Forrest and Marie).

He was married to Marie Catherine RAND (daughter of Frederick William (OSTERTAG) RAND and Maude Agnes GALIGAN) on 22 Mar 1944 in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor Co., Washington. (43) The announcement from the Aberdeen Daily World reported in part

"The marriage took place Wednesday evening in the parish house of St. Mary's Catholic church in Aberdeen.
"Although quietly solemnized, the wedding was a pretty one. The double ring ceremony was read by the Rev. Father M. O'Donnell in the presence of relatives and a few intimate friends of the young couple. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Poe, brother-in-law and sister of the bridegroom, were the attendants.
"The bride wore a floor-length dress of white taffeta with a fingertip length veil attached to a coronet of pearls. She carried a white prayer book with a cluster of gardenias. . .
"A reception followed at the Rand home with 25 guests attending. Daffodils decorated the room, and the refreshment table was centered with a large wedding cake topped with miniature figures of a soldier and his bride."

Marie Catherine RAND (21)(21) Photo was born on 18 Apr 1926 in Cosmopolis, Grays Harbor Co., Washington. Born at the family home, she was the youngest of 10 children born to Frederick William RAND and Maud Agnes GALIGAN Rand. When applying for a passport in 1975, she discovered that her birth certificate listed her name as Joan Marie. According to her sister Margaret Rand Murphy, her parents changed their mind about her name sometime after she was born, and simply began calling her Marie Catherine without ever formally changing her name. The state records have now been amended. Forrest Ward LYONS and Marie Catherine RAND had the following children:

child+114 i. Allen Ward LYONS.
child+115 ii. Steven Fredrick LYONS.
child+116 iii. Forrest Mark LYONS.
