Notes for Richard Long: Fought in WWII as a member of the Canadian Army.
From "Veterans of Antigonish County":
When they landed on the beaches in Sicily, Richard was the Corporal of a man named Neil. Once Sicily was cleaned up, they moved on to Italy. Richard showed him how to make a moon shine still. If they were in one spot for any length of time, Richard would set up a still, take the Italy wine and make moon shine. For some reason, he lost his Corporal stripes and was bumped down to a Private for several months. Neil said, "he was a big man, six feet or more. He looked like an old lumber jack who just came into to town for the first time - a farm boy." While overseas, Richard captured a Swahili flag from one of the German tanks. For some reason, Neil ended up with it and brought it back to Canada for Richard. After Richard settled in the USA, on a return visit, he went to see Neil and Neil gave him the flag.
