In the year 1818 Alex Chisholm and his wife Isabel and their family emigrated from Strathglass, Scotland to Antigonish, Nova Scotia. They took up land at Black River (now known as Black Avon) at the farm where their great grandson, Colin Chisholm (brother of John A. Chisholm) would later live out his years. They had a family of 6 children. Their brave start in building a home, clearing, and cultivating the land was saddened by the death of Alex just 4 years after their arrival. Isabel and her children courageously strove to provide a living under great difficulties in their primeval new home of Canada. It was a case of facing life with great determination.
