AZARUS MADDUX:
Name also found spelled Maddox.

Lazarus Maddox patented "Maddox Hope" on 1/14/1666-7 and on June 20th of the following year he was granted a patent for 300 acres to which he gave the curious name "Mother's Care." This was probably where he made his home because he retained it until 3/26/1709 when he conveyed it to George Gale. He held various tracts of land and in 1700 was in possession of 1200 acres, including Maddux Hope, Bozman's Choice, Cain's Choice and Maddox Adventure. In 1709 he purchased of Thomas Walker, his son-in-law, 700 acres called "Whitefield."

Elected to the House of Burgesses approximately 1692 along with Roger Woolford, and John Bozman (Lazarus' step brother).

Lazarus and Alexander were extremely close for half brothers. They were only a year apart in age and probably married about the same time, 1677 or 1678. Both Lazarus and Alexander named 6 of their 8 children the same name. They died within a few months of each other.

Lazarus' wife was named Sarah, her maiden name unknown. They had a large family, at least nine children being alive when he wrote his will in 1715/6. His will was witnessed by Francis Lord, James Wills, William Henderson and Marcy Fountaine. To Thomas, Lazarus and Daniel, he left all his land on the south side of the Manokin River, containing 900 acres. To Alexander and William he left Whitefield. To his wife, he left the plantation, and other household items. To each of his daughters he left a silver spoon.

(Note: Russell Hornsby has all the same family information, except his records show Lazarus' name as Stephen Lazarus.)
