Notes for J
AMES MONROE MADDUX:
James and his wife Sarah Naomi Harris, a second cousin of Thomas Jefferson, loaded their family and household goods into wagons at the pioneer Maddux home in Walker County, Georgia and onto a steamboat at Memphis, Tennessee. From the Mississippi river, the boat entered the Arkansas river. At Pine Bluff, Arkansas, they bought teams and a yoke of oxen in preparation for their trip to Magazine, Scott County, Arkansas. They later moved to Sebastain County, near Ft. Smith.

Soon the family started for Colorado with two mule-drawn wagons and one ox-drawn wagon loaded with family and possessions. Forty head of cattle followed. Past Dodge City, Kansas, they country was overrun with grasshoppers. The cattle were getting thin and footsore, James thought it best to return. On the way back the cattle were sold and the family headed for the northern part of Arkansas. They bought two farms near Minesville.

Then James got the Texas fever. The family headed for Texas October 12, 1876. He bought 200 acres, more or less, of rough unimproved land southeast of Millsap for $500.00. They moved there in December, 1876, and put up a temporary log cabin. Then they set about building a permanent home.

Giving two acres for a school and church, Maddux also had land staked off for the Brock Cemetery, with the north star as a guide, because he wanted to be buried on his own land. He was the first person buried in the cemetery.
