Notes for N
EWEL INMAN:
Newell Inman inherited a large farm from his father and as time went by, he and Phoebe bought several more farms in the Woodville and Slate Mtn. areas of Surry Co., NC. He also ran a country store which was the gathering place for the community. On Saturday afternoons the Inman boys, their cousins and others would get together to play baseball. they had one of the finest amateur baseball teams in northwestern NC. On Saturday nights, the neighbors gathered at the store and watched the men clog-dance to the tune of a fiddle and banjo while the neighborhood women watched the dancing and listened to the music. Newell also began a local telephone company and issued stock in this company. The switchboard was located in his home and was run by his daughter, Flora.

Notes for P
HOEBE ANN HUNTER:
Phoebe Ann Hunter Inman was educated at the old Westfield school (the first one to be built in Surry Co., NC) It was set up by the Friends Church and led by Ellen Minthorne, who was President Herbert Hoover's aunt. Phoebe walked a long distance to school in shoes that were homemade and too small which caused her to have lifelong trouble with her feet. She and Newell raised ten children and one grandchild. She worked outdoors and helped with the crops until she was seventy years of age. She also worked on a loom and wove coverlets which are still in the family and highly prized. She retained a lifelong interest in current and political events and was proud of the fact that she never missed voting at local and national elections. She never missed the Huntley and Brinkley nightly news report and read newspapers without the help of glasses until her death.

BROTHERS CLOSE IN LIFE DIE ON SAME DAY

ByMONDEETILLEY, Staff Writer

MOUNT AIRY Two brothers who were close in life died
within hours of each other at a local hospital Tuesday morning.
Ausie and Earlie Inman will be buried today following a double
funeral at Moody Funeral Home.
Tom Inman, a brother of the two, said the older one, Earlie, 93,
passed away at Northern Hospital of Surry County at 4 a.m. Tues-
day; He said both brothers had pneumonia and were staying across
the hall from one another, just as they had while staying in Surry
Community Nursing home.
"I went to the hospital to see Ausie at about 9 o'clock Tuesday
morning. I asked Dr. Bokesch if I should tell him that Earlie had
pased away. He said he thought I should, that it would be for the
best. I went ahead and told him,": Inman commented.
He was talking and seemed to be doing okay. The doctor said
He might even be able to go back to the nursing home from the
hospital this Saturday. So I went by Moody's to take care of the
arrangements for Earlie. Then I went home for lunch."
He related through quiet tears how the hospital called him at I
Pm to tell him to hurry back, "Ausie had taken a turn for the
worse. He rushed back to the hospital from his home in Holly Springs,
And sadly by the time he got there, Ausie had passed away as well.
I was too late, he was already gone." Although greiving the loss of two brothers,
Tom Inman wanted to say that he knew his brothers were both "real bad off. They
were both ready to go." Earlie entered the hospital last Thursday on his birthday. Ausie,
90, had already been hospitalized for a few days before that. Earlie married once,
but it didn't last. Ausie never married. Their brother said,
"They didn't really have any family to speak of just each other and their other
brothers and sisters."
There were originally seven
brothers. Tom Inman men-
tioned how another brother,
James, who was 82 at the time
of his death three years ago,
died while staying in the same
room with Ausie at Surry Com-
munity Nursing Center.
Besides Tom, only one
brother, Lindy, remains. He's
75 years old and Inman said,
"he's real sick."
Earlie retired from The Bal-
timore Sun as the distribution
manager. Ausie was well
known in Mount Airy for his
work in the landscaping busi-
ness which he did for more than
30 years.

Ausie had lived in Surry
Community Nursing Center for
a number of years and was
joined this summer by his
brother. They had pneumonia
several times and had been in
and out of the hospital.
Their funeral will be held to-
day at 2 p.m. Following the
service, two hearses will drive
the brothers to their respective
grave sites. Earlie will be
buried first at Holly Springs
Baptist Church Cemetery.
Ausie will then be buried at In-
dian Grove Baptist Church
Cemetery.
The funeral directors at
Moody's said none of them re-
member having a double funer-
al. "It rarely ever happens,"
noted Rixie Gordon, a IO-year
employee.
