Notes for VERNON TALMADGE HIATT: OBIT: Vernon Talmage Hiatt MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Vernon Talmage Hiatt, 79, went peacefully home to his Heavenly Father, surrounded by his loving family, Sunday, July 27, 2003, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Hiatt was born March 5, 1924, in the town of Wake Forest, the second of 11 children of David Lafayette and Ethel M. Puckett Hiatt. He was raised in the Sheltontown community of Mount Airy and graduated from Flat Rock High School as valedictorian in 1941. He attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, before enlisting in the Army during World War II. He proudly served his country in the South Pacific as an artilleryman and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism beyond the call of duty during the battle in Okinawa. Before leaving for his tour of duty overseas, he married Norma Jean Williams of Orem, Utah, on Jan. 3, 1944, in Medford, Ore. Their union was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on May 5, 1944. Together they have shared the challenges and joys of life for almost 60 years. After the war he returned to North Carolina and completed his education at UNC Chapel Hill, graduating with an AB in political science in 1949 and a law degree (L.L.B.) in 1951. He practiced law in Surry County for 50 years as Hiatt & Hiatt, Attorneys at Law, first in partnership with his father, David L. Hiatt and later with his son, David P. Hiatt. He was actively involved in civic and community service throughout his life. Mr. Hiatt was a fifth-generation member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he held a host of leadership positions, including branch president, bishop, counselor in two stake presidencies and he was a high councilman for 21 years. He continued to be a faithful home teacher until the recent months of his hospital confinement. Many have been blessed by his tireless efforts to serve his fellowmen and the Lord. He lived a life of integrity and dedication to truth and he leaves a lasting legacy of faith in our Savoir Jesus Christ. During his youth Talmage was quite an athlete, excelling in football and boxing, and his love of sports continued all his life. He was an enthusiastic spectator and his family will miss helping him cheer for his favorite teams, especially those from North Surry High School and the Tarheels of UNC. He took up golf in his later years and enjoyed playing with his sons and grandsons. He dearly loved spending time with his family. He was a dutiful son, loyal brother, wise father, cuddly grandfather, and above all, a devoted husband. His gentle kindness and loving guidance will be greatly missed by all who love him. He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean of Mount Airy; six children, Tamela (James) Midkiff of Winston-Salem, Kenny G. (Kathleen) Hiatt of Mount Airy, V. Craig (Ann) Hiatt of Salisbury, Sharron (Dale) Higbee of Twin Falls, Idaho, Laurel (James) Zywot of Jacksonville, Fla. and David P. (Maria) Hiatt of Mount Airy; 25 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; seven brothers, Junior L. Hiatt of Mount Airy, Rudger (Ruth) Hiatt of Mesa, Ariz., Wilbur D. (Ara Jean) Hiatt of Mount Airy, David H. (Marilyn) Hiatt of Bakersfield, Calif., and Paul (Faye) Hiatt, William S. (Rita) Hiatt and Ephraim (Amy) Hiatt, all of Mount Airy; and three sisters, Portia (Lynn) Hansen of Bountiful, Utah, Ethel Atkins of Mount Airy, and Anne (Stan) Madsen of West Bountiful, Utah. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, in the Mount Airy Ward chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Temple Lane (off Old Highway 601) with Bishop Wayne Sheets officiating. Burial will follow in the James Monroe Hiatt Memorial Cemetery on Westfield Road in the Sheltontown community, with full military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard, Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. Friends may visit the family from 7 to 9 this evening, July 29, at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy and from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral service Wednesday. Norma and the children wish to express appreciation for the wonderful support of family members and friends, and they would especially like to thank the compassionate caregivers who were patient and considerate with Talmage during the long months of his illness. Memorials may be sent to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Published in the Winston-Salem Journal on 7/29/2003. |
