Descendants of Johann Petri

Generation No. 4

4. JOHAN JACOB4 PETRI (JOHAN NIKLAS3, JOHANNES2, JOHANN1)3 was born 24 Jan 1722/23 in Germany4, and died 03 May 1804 in Muddy Creek, Stokes Co. NC5. He married ANNA EVA KUEHNLIN5 29 Sep 1747 in Richmond , Berks Co., PA5, daughter of KILLIAN KUEHNLIN. She was born 1720 in Holland5, and died 12 Oct 1790 in Forsyth Co., NC5.

OHAN JACOB PETRI:
Betsy Hendrix (ID *****9761) Date: July 22, 2003 at 17:24:05 writes:

"I've been reading various messages and realize that a lot of people are wondering where Jacob Petri was from in Germany.
After 2 years of continuous research I obtained copies from the Lutheran Archives in Bopard that show Jacob was from Schonborn, Germany (near Alterkulz) south of Bopard. He was born Jan. 24, 1723 (contrary to 9/1722) and baptized Jan 31, 1723. He was the son of Johan/Nickel/Niklas Petri and 2nd wife Anna Margaretha Schall (of Biebern) and were married Jan. 1722. Niklas died 11/1750 and is buried in Schonborn. Niklas' father was Johannes Petri, he died 1712. Johannes father was also called Johann and he died 1673. I have copies of the following documents: baptism record of Jacob Petri; marriage record of Niklas and Margarthea in 1722; death record of Niklas in 1750; marriage record of Jacob and Anna, 1747, Kutztown, PA, Mt. Zion Moselim Church; passenger ship list ofthe Loyal Judith with Jacob Petri's signature, 1743."

Johan Jacob's surname was spelled Petri and Petry but the spelling was changed later to Petree and Petree. Johan left Germany in his youth after learning the trade of a shoemaker. He sailed from Rotterdam on the ship "Loyal Judith", and arrived in Philadelphia, PA 2 Sep 1743. Jacob and Eva raised a sizeable family before moving to NC. Their two oldest sons, Adam and John left PA to come to NC, probably by way of Norfolk,VA and then west from Norfolk and down into NC. They must have written or gone back to convince Johan and Eva to also come to NC. Jacob was "getting along in years" by this time, but moved to a new country and became a solid citizen. There is a record of Jacob Petree being naturalized on 4 Apr 1762 in Windsor Township, Bucks Co., PA. Records indicate Jacob was a shoemaker, but land records, estate papers, will, etc., after he reached this area, show farming was his primary occupation in NC. Land was the lure that encouraged Jacob and his adult sons to move from PA. His two oldest sons fought the Chicamoga Indians defending the colony just before the Revolution. Jacob provided supplies for NC forces and was reimbursed for this according to payment records. Jacob and his son, John Henry, were patriots in the American Revolution, DAR # 729510. Jacob and his wife were Lutheran. He and Adam Geiger received 100 acres as a land grant for the "German Church" (now the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Rural Hall, NC)

The first Petrees in NC were Lutherans. Jacob Petri was one of the first trustees of the Nazareth Lutheran Church (referred to in old records as the German Church) in Rural Hall, Forsyth Co., NC. He received a grant of acreage with another trustee for the use of the church in December, 1790. There is a document relating to this round in Stokes Co., NC. Records.

"Know all men by these present that whereas JACOB PETREE and ADAM GEIGER have some years ago by money voluntarily subscribed said by the members of the Lutheran Church entered and paid for 102 acres of land more or less lying and being in Stokes Co., NC on the Waters of Beaver Dam Creek, whereunto a church belonging to said society is erected and whereas the grant for said land did come out in the name of said ADAM GEIGER and JACOB PETREE who were then Elders and trustees of said church and whereas we the subscribers executor and heir of the said JACOB PETREE have no claim to the said land, being convinced that what our testator of ancestor claimed was only as in trust for said society, do hereby and by others present for us and our heirs remiss, convey, release and forever disclaim unto Lewis Wolf and John Null, the present trustees of said Church and to their successors in office forever, all rights, title, claim, interest and demands which we ever had, in witness whereof we hereunto set our hand and seal October 31, 1812."

This is signed by John Frye, Harmon Miller and Jacob Miller (apparently witnesses) and by Jacob (X) Petree, Jr; Valentine (X) Fry; a name in German, John Kraus, Dorothy Kraus (X), and Mary Alice Petree (Jacob, Jr.'s daughter.) This was registered in the June Term of Stokes County Court, 1817.

Lesly Petree Klippel of CA who has been extracting German records for 35 years states that the notation of Johann Jacob's Christening record indicates he left the parish on 24 Mar 1765 and thus could not have been the Johann Jacob Petri who arrived in PA in 1743. This notation is in Latin and states: extrahir 24 Maerz 1765. Lesly P. Klippel states she checked this with Larry Jensen, a leading German genealogist and he agreed with the interpretation that the date is when Johann Jacob left Kirchberg.

However, I received the following email on August 20, 2001:

Subject: Johan Jacob Petri

Hope you can help. I am a descendant of J.J.Petri and have some differing information to the author of the descendant page. Johan Jacob Petri was born Jan. 24, 1723 and was baptized Jan. 31, 1723 in Schonborn, Germany, near Alterkulz. I have a copy of the church record stating this fact.
I am concerned about Lesly Klippel's interpretation of her belief that Jacob Petri didn't leave Germany until 1765. Dr. Stefan Flesch of the Lutheran Archives in Boppard states this sentence: "he (Jacob Petri) was "extrahiert" in 1765, i.e. the pastor wrote him out of the registers because of his emigration." This is a quite different interpretation from "he left the parish on Mar 24 1765" stated on the website.
In addition, I have a copy of the Hacker study which states that "J.Jakob Petri, Alterkulz" immigrated to American on Sept. 2, 1743.
If this isn't the same Jacob Petri, how does one explain the marriage to Anna Kuehnlin in 1747 in Pennsylvania??
I would like to have this information published on the website so that readers/descendants can determine for themselves.
I also have the marriage record of Jacob Petri's parents: Johan Niklas and Anna Margaretha Schall (of Biebern) Petri. They were married Jan. 20, 1722.
Would you help me get in contact with whomever I need to in order to discuss this information? Thanks very much for your help!

In 1998, Betsy Hendrix suggested that a marker for Johan Jacob Petri be placed in the cemetery at the Nazareth Lutheran Church. After Betsy talked to a member of the church staff, she was told that through her research and confirmation, that indeed Jacob was most probably buried beside Anna and they would pursue obtaining the marker. Betsy paid for half the marker and the church paid the other half. In May 1998 the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Rural Hall, NC (old Beaver Dam Lutheran Church which Johan Jacob Petree helped found) purchased a simple marker for Johann Jacob and dedicated it in a special service. From family accounts and genealogical research it wasdetermined that Johann Jacob was buried next to his wife. The arrangement of the gravestones in that part of the grave yard also suggested that he was buried beside his wife. They placed the marker on the grave site next to her. Johann Jacob Petree was honored as a founding father. He and another man, Adam Geiger held the trust to the church land during a time when the law would not let corporations (businesses and churches) own land. The land had to be held in trust by individuals. He did a great service for the church.

..............................................
The Daughters of the American Revolution gave the data on this
man in a book entitled Early Families of N. C. Counties of
Rockingham and Stokes with Revolutionary Service, a copy of
which may be found in the Fifth St. Library in Winston-Salem.
In 1780 Jacob Petree bought 175 acres of land in Surry County
from Valentine Frey Sr. on Townfork Creek. Petree became a
member of the Lutheran Church on Beaver Dam Creek and was a
trustee in that church in 1790 when the state of N.C. granted
him and Adam Geiger 102 acres in trust for the Lutherans.
Petree married in 1747 to Anna Eva Kuehnlin in Berks Co., PA.
Petree's will is recorded in the Stokes County Will Book II, on
Pages 54-55 and is dated 1803 and probated at his death in 1804.

  Notes for JOHANN JACOB KRAUSE:
Melchior's son, Johannes, also known as John or Johann, seems to have had several children die young. The first known child is Magdalena, apt 1765 at Trinity Evang Luth Ch, New Holland, PA. Her mother is listed as Maria.

Records from the Bethabara Parish Graveyard Records at Bethabara, Wachovia Tract, NC list these non-Moravian burials.

Child, Cath. Kraus d 1771, dau of Johann Kraus
Child, Johann Kraus, no parent given d 1774
Child, Christina Elis. Kraus, dau of Johann, d 1782
Unmarried man, Adam Krause, 16 yrs old, son of Johann Kraus, d Mar 7, (b Nov 25, 1769, Lebanon, PA, Records of Moravians, p. 2150)
Boy, Isaac Krausse, 13 yrs old, son of Johannes Krause, d 23 Jul 1800, bur Jul 25.
Married Woman, Anna Maria Krause, born Volk, (Wife of Johannes Krause) d May 23, bur May 24, 1801
Married Woman, Anna Mary Chitty, d Nov 7, 1792, maiden name Kraus

Joye Elkins also lists as children: George Krause, whose marriage bond to Louise Holder is recorded 29 Mar 1803, Stokes Co., NC., Anna Maria (Hannah) Crouse, Andreas Crouse, died at young age, and Andrew Crouse, whose marriage bond to Sarah Long is recorded on 29 Mar 1803 at Stokes Co., NC. Joye also lists Maria Margarette Crouse who married John Chitty on 17 Mar 1791 as a child. They had 9 children. This could not be Married Woman, Anna Mary Chitty listed above.

The will of John Kraus on 26 Aug 1825 lists son, George Krause, son-in-law, John Chitty, son, Andrew, son-in-law, Jacob Miller, son-in-law, Dan'l Petree, Joseph Chitty, no relationship given, wife, Dorothea, dau, Hannah Petree.

Maybe the Anna Maria that Joye listed as (Hannah) was the Anna Mary Kraus Chitty buried at Bethabara, and she married Joseph Chitty listed in John's will and (Hannah) is another sister, who married Daniel Petree.

Dorothea is John Krouse's 2nd wife, Dorothy Petree. They applied for a marriage license 29 Mar 1803.

In the Shiloh Lutheran Church records, Forsythe Co., NC is the baptism of a dau of Jacob & Magdalen Miller June 1801 with John Krouse, widower, Margaretha Chitty, & Elizabeth Miller as sponsers. Magdalen must be the Magdalen baptised at Trinity Evang Luth Ch, dau of John Krause, and her husband is the Jacob Miller, son-in-law, in John's will.
