The following was taken from the Moravian Archives in Old Salem, NC and translated from German into English:

At widow's request, conducted funeral of neighbor Adam Petri. All of people from both local settlements had gathered in house of deceased. After some verses had been sung, body accompanied to the church in German settlement where the funeral was held. Burial address delivered in church to a large congregation in English and in German on words Isaiah 38:1. It dealt with the necessity of taking care of his soul's salvation in time so that one could leave this world joyfully.

The deceased born 2 Nov 1748 in Berks Co., PA and brought up as a Lutheran. There he learned the smith's trade and moved in the year 1776 to NC. In this region he married the following year the widow Rosena, the daughter of Valentine Frye. In this union God blessed them with one son and five daughters.
Among his neighbors he had the reputation of being a peace loving man who found joy in serving the poorest of his fellowmen in word and deed, not only in his trade but with his knowledge of medicine. Therefore his loss to this area is generally lamented by everyone who knew him.

The occasion of his end was the following accident: About fourteen days ago he drove to the mill near Bethabara. On his way back the horses shied. As he jumped from the wagon he fell under it so that it passed over him. Neither he nor anyone else thought that it would have serious consequences, so he didn't make much ado about it. But on Friday last he developed a serious attack of inflammation and it was evident that the circumstance mentioned above had caused him some internal hurt which would become the occasion for his end. During the few days of his sickness he remained quiet on the whole and bore his pains with patience until he passed away on Tuesday evening in the forty-fifth year of his age.

Francis Petree moved to Adair Co., KY in 1814. In the Adair Co., KY Courthouse there is a Power of Attorney from Joan Dent, Caty Dent, late Cathy Petree, and Francis Petree to Joseph Boyer of Adair Co., Ky to sell land and other valuables coming to them as heirs of Adam Petree, deceased of Rowan and Stokes Co., NC. Paper is dated 14 Sep 1812. This is doubtless in connection with the final settlement of the estate of Jacob Petree, Sr. "living near Hope in Stokes and Rowan Counties and suggest that Adam Petre lived a short distance north of present town of Clemmons, NC

Notes for J
OHANN HEINRICH PETREE:
The Petrees and the Winstons were neighbors in the Townfork section near Germanton, NC. Joseph Winston was one of the heroes of both the Battle of King's Mountain and the battle of Guilford Courthouse, and the Winston in the name Winston-Salem was to honor him. Family tradition says that Henry Petree served as Winston's Aide. There is no documentary evidence that the researchers have found to support this, but records on NC volunteers are quite meager in any event. Draper (1881)mentions that and the aide got Winston away after he was injured at King's Mtn. and prevented his capture by the British during this period. Family tradition indicated that Henry was severly injured at Guilford Courthouse and that Winston sent him home in his own carriage. IF Henry had ever applied for a pension this might have substantiated and documented his service but he died before he could have done so. Only disabled revolutionary servicemen could apply before 1816 because the financial resources of the government were limited. If they wished to move west, it was possible for them to ask for bounty land, but obviously he decided to remain in Stokes Co., NC. (This information from Ruth Petree and Rachel Fulton Rawls.)

This is the will of Henrich Petree:

1. "I, Henry Petree, of Stokes County in the State of NC being in good health and of sound mind and memory, thanks be given to Almighty God calling into mind the mortality of man and knowing it to be the destination of all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, recommend my soul into the hands of my Creator Jesus Christ and my body to be interred in decent Christian burial. And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to help me, I give, bequeath and demise the same in manner and form following: viz: I give unto Margaretha, my dearly beloved wife, all of my estate both real and personal to have, as long as she shall live a widow and it is my will that if any of my eight children named John, Catherine, Solomon, Henry, Mary Barbara, Ann, Margaretha Elizabeth and Ann Eva shall begin to keep house for themselves then she shall give unto each of them out of this estate so much for a beginning as she is able to do, provided, however, that one child shall always have equally as much in value as another, which shall always at every time be fixed and established.

2. But in case she should marry again then all of my land and plantation with my personal property shall be publicly sold by my executors and then she shall have the third part of the whole estate as her own sole property forever and she shall likewise have over and above this said third part, one horse creature, one cow and one iron pot, all of this of her own choice, and also her own bedding and her chest as her sole property forever. The remaining two thirds, equally divided amongst my above named children share and share alike.

3. And I do hereby ordain, constitute and appoint my dearly beloved wife, Margaretha and my trusted friends, John Zimmerman and Peter Frazier, executors. In witness, I have hereunto put my hand and seal this twelfth day of September in the year of our Lord, one thousand, eight hundred.

s/Henry Petree SEAL

This was witnessed by John Rights, Sr. and John Rights, Jr.

Henry took the oath of allegiance in Berks Co., PA 13 Jun 1777

Notes for M
ARGARETHA BARBARA MAGDALENA ZIMMERMAN:

Margaretha survived her husband by many years. She did not remarry. Finally, she and her son, Solomon, with the consent of other heirs signed an agreement in 1823 in which he assumed responsibility for seeing that her needs were supplied while he used the lands. This appears in book 8, page 223 of the Stokes County,NC records and has some interesting features since it tells something of what were the necessities of life for the members of the family.

"State of NC, Stokes Co., ":Articles of agreement between Solomon Petree and his mother, Margaretha Petree. The said Margarethea Petree agrees with the said Solomon that him or his heirs shall live on and tend the lower part of the plantation which he now lives on, during her natural life, provided the said Solomon or his heirs shall pay yearly to the said Margaretha Petree the just quantity of fifteen barrels of corn, fifteen bushels of wheat, six hundred bundles of fodder, fill her stable loft with hay and give her four wagon loads besides give her as much ground as she will tend in cotton and her garden as it now stands fenced and let her have pasturage for her cow calves and hogs along with his as usual and furnishes her with a sufficient quantity of fire wood at her house and proviced he or they find fire wood as above. She is not to give any other person privilege to cut timber or fire wood for any other purpose, further should the said Solomon Petree or his heirs fail to pay the said Margaretha the above quantity of corn, wheat, fodder and hay and find her wood and allow her her garden and cotton patch then this bargain to be void otherwise to remain in full force. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 4th day of October 1824.

All of the children there and John who was in Lincoln County agreed of course, and signed an indenture on 20 April 1823 (Book 8, page 72 Deed Book of Stokes Co. NC) Those who signed were Thomas Tuttle and Catherine, his wife, Michael Tuttle and Polly his wife, Lazarus Hawkins and Elizabeth, his wife, Henry H. Frye and Margaret his wife, William Hartman and Anna Eva, his wife, John Petree and Henry Petree all signed. Interestingly enough all the men signed their names and the women made their marks.
