OHN PETREE:
Following information from Charles G. Eccleston cgecc@juno.com:

A. J. (John) Petre was recorded as a witness at a wedding ceremony on October 26, 1840 in Linn Co., MO. Of particular interest is the fact that the groom, Thomas Mongoeon is half Osage Indian. The bride was the widow Bastien (Helen De'haitre.) The wedding took place at the American Fur Company's Marais des Cygnes post. (source - "The Beginning of the West" 1840- page 418. We have a family story that Johon Petree's wife, Mary Fisher may have been part Indian, but no records to that effect have been found. There is an unusual paragraph at the end of a 1965 letter from Vivian Clipson Coffey, Sharpsburg, IA to Sylvia Roles of Cottage Grove, OR that reads as follows: "Don't mind your nose and you can be proud of your Indian blood - they were the real Americans." The letter was about their shared Petree/Miller ancestors.

John and Mary "Polly" were living in Rochester Twp., Andrew Co., MO when the 1850 MO census was taken. The childred still at home were Delila, (17), Sarah A. (13), William (8) and Mary C. (6). A neighbor's son, Byrus Mosier (19) is living with the family as a laborer. Older Petree sons, Mahlon (22) and James (20) are thought to have ventured out to the Oregon Territory, possibly with the family of Miller relatives or friends, to find land for the Petree family to claim. John is shown as a blacksmith born in NC owning real estate valued at $600. Mary Polly Fisher was born in IN as was her first four childlren. Children William and Mary are born in MO, which established the family migration to MO to the years from 1838 to 1841.

1852: The Savannah, MO Sentinal published the following articles regarding the movement West:
May 1,1852---- "The rush continues as great as ever. Our streets are thronged with teams an d vehicles of every description----bound principally for California, though some times the wa gons are chalked 'for Oregon'. Many of our townsmen have left during the past week [Petree, R ichason, Rohrer, Holt, McCord, Clark, and Chambers.----etc.]
May 15,1852---- The Sentinal gave the names of 105 heads of families who, taking their famili es, averaging eight to each, "have left this [Andrew] county for California and Oregon this Spring".

Migration observations at St Joseph during the time the Petrees were crossing the Missouri Ri ver: "Teams crossing the river all the while, but there are not half ferry boats here..... There is every description of teams and wagons, from a hand cart and wheel barrow, to a fine six horse carriage and buggy; but more than two thirds are oxen and wagons similar to our own. .....Most of the horses, mules, and cattle are the best the states afford.....". Source:" The Beginning of the West" pg. 1085.

John & Mary settled on their DLC#831 (Vol. III Pg 55) near Cresswell, OR in 1852, with the final patent being issued on Feb 25,1882 on John's behalf to Joel Ware. Andrew County, MO is in the northwest corner of the state not far from the Kansas, Nebraska , and Iowa state borders. Andrew County is north of Buchanan County where the Petrees lived prior to moving to Andrew County
