Notes for J
OHN GREER:
Andrea Dougan, a fellow Greer researcher, sent me this and said I
could share it. You have John Greer on your RootsWeb World Connect
site, so I thought you might be interested. If you use it, please give
Ms. Dougan credit. She prefaced it with:

My sister found this page at either the Martinsville or Mooresville
Library in Morgan County in a correspondence file. I have no idea what
the source is. I'm sure if she had known she would have written it at
the top of the page for me. He is called Captain throughout this
sketch, but as far as I know, he was mustered out as a Lieutenant.

Here and There

Included in the historical stories of Morgan county [Indiana]
lawmakers as written by Noah J. Major, is one that is especially
interesting to this writer. The story in this case relates to Captain
John E. Greer. The writer knew Capt. Greer when the latter resided on
a farm seven miles west of Independence, Kansas.

In our youthful days, or childhood days, to speak more correctly, our
family lived farther west in the same county and the main road over
which we traveled to the county seat - Independence - passed by the
Greer farm. The Greer home was one of the best in the county. A large
barn placed on a hillside sheltered cattle and horses, and the feed
that was stored for winter use. It was a red barn, for red was the
color mostly used in that county in those days in painting barns. The
young folks in Capt. Greer's family were popular with their fellows
and they were nearly always on hand for the social events of the
community.

But here is Uncle Noah's story concerning Capt. Greer -

"Captain John E. Greer was elected representative (for Morgan County)
[Indiana] by the Republicans in 1866. The nomination took place in
William Hardwick's barn near Centerton. In August, 1862, the President
called for 300,000 more volunteers, and Captain Greer raised about
thirty-five men, who were assigned to the fifth cavalry. After the war
he returned home in Green Township and resumed farming and stock
feeding. He was a stalwart Republican and trustworthy member of the
Legislature of 1867."

"Captain Greer was born in Scott County, Kentucky, December 10, 1827,
and came with his parents to this county in 1838. In 1848 he married
Miss Mahala Petre of Decatur County. To this union were born eleven
children, eight of whom are living and reside in Kansas. Captain Greer
moved to Kansas in 1880, where he engaged principally in buying and
shipping mules to the South. He died suddenly at Independence, Kansas,
January 17, 1896."

"The Greers are of Irish descent and seem to be endowed with the
military spirit, as several of their ancestors served in the
Revolutionary war as well as the war of 1812. Most of the older Greers
settled in Ohio, but John A. Greer, father of Captain Greer, settled
in Kentucky. In 1842, four years after he came to this county, he
started with a flatboat, laden with farm products, to New Orleans, but
when nearing Vicksburg he died and was buried on the bank of the
Mississippi river. Grant Stafford was appointed administrator of the
estate and some time elapsed before the settlement was completed."

We remember Captain Greer as one of the leading men of the county in
Kansas in which we both lived. He was active in affairs of the
Republican Party and he could always be counted on to do his full
share in every campaign in behalf of his party. He was also successful
in business, even in the years when grasshoppers, and other pests or
hot winds would lessen the prospects of the farmers. He was not a man
to surrender to discouraging circumstances.
