Notes for WILLIAM STOCKTON MILLER:
1850: William Miller arrived in the Oregon Territory on September 10, 1850, and settled DLC # 1095 on July 5, 1853. Other records show arrival on July 16, 1851.

1895: Obituary for William Stockton Miller---(no publication info known)--- W.S. Miller of Cresswell, who died at Lebanon, OR, August 5, 1895, at home of his daughter, Mrs Liza Winkie, was born in Millersburg, Illinois, December 26, 1832. The deceased was a grandnephew of Commodore F.C. Stockton one of the early governors of Calif, and is therefore a direct descendant of the Pilgrims. The Stockmans having come over on the Mayflower. He leaves four sons and four daughters to mourn his loss. The remains were brought from Lebanon on the overland train Tuesday night and Wednesday were interred by the Masons in the little green grass grown cemetery at Cresswell. After the Mason's services were ended Rev. C.H. Wallace offered a fervent prayer. The grave was covered with beautiful bouquets of floral pieces of offerings of relatives and friends, and at last we realize that the life battle of one more weary old man was ended. Never again will there be the need of prayer for him or tears, or flowers. Fortune and fate had laid a cruel hand on this good old man blighting the threads of hope with which he began life, but fate and fortune are powerless to harm him more. At last he sleeps in the little grave yard presented to the town of Cresswell by the Miller family many years ago, by the side of Delilah Petree Miller, mother of his children he sleeps at last and the sighing winds by day and the sentinal stars at night will keep watch o'er the grave of the loved Father who is at rest.

Notes for BENJAMIN J. PETREE:
BIOGRAPHY: History of Andrew Co. and DeKalb Co. MO, 977.81 H2b:
Benjamin Petree, ex-judge of the county court, and a prosperous farmer of Clay Township, was born in Franklin County, Ind., February 4, 1834. He is the son of Henry and Mary (Snowden) Petree. The father, a native of North Carolina, was born in 1907. The mother was a native of Ohio, born on August 13, 1811. They were married in Indiana, where they lived, engaged in farming, until 1843, at which time they came to Andrew County, Mo., where they died, the father about 1872, the mother in the fall of 1844. In politics the father was a Whig. The mother was a member of the Christian Church. Benjamin is the third of six children. He received a common-school education, which has been much improved by desultory reading and study. He went with his father to California in the fall of 1849. The latter remained there about one year, when he returned to Missouri; but Benjamin remained until 1857, engaged in mining. He then came back to Missouri, and upon his return settled in Andrew County, and commenced his present occupation. In the spring of 1857 he bought and removed to a farm one and one-fourth miles east of Savannah, where he lived till 1876, when he exchanged that for his present home. His farm consists of 190 acres of good land, with a neat residence, barn and other buildings upon it. In November, 1860, he
wedded Miss Lucy Earls, a native of Platte County, but reared in Andrew County. She is the daughter of Jonathan and Francis Earls. The former was the first treasurer of Andrew County. In the early part of 1864 Mr. Petree enlisted in the United States Army, joining the Eighteenth Missouri Infantry, with which he served until the close of the war. He accompanied Sherman from Atlanta to Washington City, and was mustered out of service at Louisville in July, 1865. In politics he is a Republican. In 1880 he was elected county judge, and served one term. His wife is a member of the Christian Church. They have had nine children - six sons and three daughters - of whom one daughter is dead.
