Notes for W
ILLIAM RILEY PETREE:
Lt. William Riley PetreeCo E, 4th Alabama "Roddey's" Cavalry, CSA
http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/Delta/3843/petree.htm
According to family tradition, Lt. Petree served as the bodyguard for Ms. Emma Samson, the young lady that helped Gen. Forrest locate a river ford, that resulted in the capture of Yankee raiders (Col. Abel Steight's raid). Later he named one of his own daughters, Etta Emaline, after Emma Samson. Lt. Petree, after the war, was a merchant in Belgreen, and elected as Sheriff.

Newspaper Obituary
"William R. Petree was born August 9, 1841 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, died December 19, 1920. He came to Alabama at the age of 19 and one year later cast his lot with the "lost cause" of the South, serving for four
years under Gen. Forest. In the year 1868 he married Miss Mary Bolton of Franklin County. To this union six children were born, five of whom are still living. His first wife died in 1878 and in 1887 he married Mary M. Hall. To this union God gave five children, but saw fit to take one of them back in infancy. This leaves nine children, with his dear wife and one sister to mourn his going.

When quite a young man, Brother Petree joined the M.E. Church South at Old Pleasant Grove, and later moved his membership to Belgreen, where he continued a faithful member until his death. He loved his church and the preacher always found a welcome in the home of Brother Petree. He could not do too much for the unfortunate, and in his business dealings he was never known to push any one to their hurt, but had rather suffer loss himself than that one act of his should cause his fellowman sorrow. He loved mankind far better than he loved dollars. One of his customs was to send a substantial check to our orphanage at Selma every Christmas, and I am sure that those children will miss his going as much as we people of Belgreen.

In 1878 he was elected sheriff of Franklin county and served the county well for four years. After this he was elected county treasurer and filled this office with honor to himself and his county for one term. About this
time he became engaged in the mercantile business here at Belgreen - and continuing actively in same until his death. On the afternoon of December 20, 1920, at 3:30 amidst a host of friends and relatives and under a covering of beautiful floral designs, we laid him to rest to await the resurrection morn. The funeral services were conducted by his pastor after which Major Downs of Sheffield, Ala., one of his comrades of the Civil war, paid him a beautiful tribute. Then, with Masonic honors, we gave his body back to the earth from whence it came. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth. Yea, saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labors."

  Notes for MAUDIE H. PETREE:
In Feb 1972, Maudie Petree Clark was living in Capitan, NM

The following item was written by Maudie Petree Clark: (The date of this article is not known. )

"John Wilson Petree was born in SC on Oct 15, 1843, moved from there to Pleasant Site, Franklin Co., AL and married Eda Elizabeth Patterson. To this union was born 10 children, 4 boys and six girls. I was the ninth child. There are only two living now, W. F. Petree, age 92 near Dallas in a home and Maudie Clark of Capitan, New Mexico, age 88.

My dad was a blacksmith when they had two children, Luther and Dave. His place of business was near the only store at Pleasant Site, AL. It was hard to make a living in his shop. To his surprise the owner of the store came out of his shop, and said, John, I want to sell my store and all in it to you. Dad said, no, I can't do that, don't have a cent to pay you. He replied, John, take over the store and pay me as you can. So he gave him the keys. I don't know how many years he had that store, must have been several years. The Post Office was put in one corner of the store. The mail came by horseback from Cherokee, Mississippi; it came twice a week. The name of the Store was General Merchantile. On the other side of the store was a place where Louis Riggs took pictures. Everything anyone would need was in there, even material to make coffins. The oldest sons would freight the stuff needed with oxen from Russellville, AL or Luka, Mississippi. Dad would go to market to Nashville, TN to guy dry goods. We only had oranges and coconuts at Christmas time. But we had the cellar full of sweet and irish potatoes, sour kraut, all kinds of can fruit and begetables. Also a small barrel of grape wine. And the smoke house was full of meat, a barrel of molasses, a barrel of salt, and lard for the year. The barrel of flour and sugar were kept in the kitchen. My dad bought a farm when the first four children got married. It was good bottom land near a creek. Had three houses on it; two were log houses. That's where the oldest got their start raising cotton and corn. We always had cows to milk and some beef to sell later in the fall. We always had peanuts and popcorn and several kinds of nuts to eat by the fireplace in the winter. I must not leave mother out. She was always knitting alnight-dad's wool sox - two paris of each of us. The girls socks were made from cotton and she spun the thread that made each of us the stockens, dyed them with bark of some kind. She had a big loom and made the most beautiful coverlets they were called, one was blue and one was red, a very beautiful design. They were made of wool and used for spreads. She also made a rag carpet with her loom for our big lilving room we had. We had grass carpeting on the parlor as the room was called then, had two pretty wooden beds in it, an organ and a pretty small table with a bowl and pitcher, a book case and rockers. The mantel was fixed with pretty vases and pictures. The fireplace was a nice built one (where the boys would come to see the oldest girls) Dad was superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School. He would go and take us younger children to the church walking. Mother would come later for the preaching sermon. All would walk home together. ............. My oldest brothers, Luther and Dave Petree lived on the place several years. They married sisters, Forte and Clemming Nelson of Pleasant Site, AL. Dad was not satisfied, not running a business, so he bought out a grocery store on Chestnut St. Thought he could do like he did in AL, charge to everybody. He thought everyone's word was as good as gold, but soon found it was quite different here. I don't remember how long he kept the store, but not too long. He bought another farm north of Abilene. My dad had an Oldsmobile and drove it in the country but not downtown. Several times a week he would walk to N. First Street to the fire station and play dominoes with the fire boys. And on June 25, 1917 he started home, was walking on the sidewalk, and the car driven by an elderly lady ran upon the sidewalk and mashed him against a brick wall. He never knew what happened. Some wanted to sue her, but mother said that would not bring dad back, but only make the lady suffer more. We did not know her, she lived near Buffalo Gap. He was the best dad anyone could have. Mother died November 11, 1933.

161. JAMES HENRY8 PETREE (WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON7, JOHN HENRY6, JOHANN HEINRICH5, JOHAN JACOB4 PETRI, JOHAN NIKLAS3, JOHANNES2, JOHANN1)647 was born 25 Jul 1850 in Atlanta, GA648, and died 19 Oct 1931 in Potosi, Taylor Co., TX649. He married (1) MARGARET NANCY TURNER BONDS649 06 Mar 1870 in Franklin Co., AL650, daughter of ANDREW BONDS and DIANAH JONES. She was born 15 Jun 1853 in Franklin Co., AL651, and died 02 Nov 1891 in Franklin Co., AL651. He married (2) MARY LOU SMITH652 24 Feb 1893 in Franklin Co., AL653. William Henry Harrison Petree and Ezekiel Petree were brothers. James Henry's son Edward Lorenzo Dow PEtree moved to Potasi, T and later convinced his father James Henry Petree to follow.   Notes for JIM R. NICHOLS:
In the fall of 1824 Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Nichols bought a home
in the east part of Stanton from Mr. W. J. Herzog and moved with
their five children still at home from Howard County in time
for the beginning of the school term. A new school had just
been completed during the summer so it was a joy to have the
privilege of attending the first year of the new school. one
son, Clarence, lived in Big Spring at this time, but later he
and his wife, Wilma, and two sons, L. J. and Billy Joe , moved
to California where they still reside.
The Nichols family had lived for several years in Howard
County, and the children all attended the school at Moore, five
miles north of Big Spring. Each year they still attend the
reunion of the Moore Community and great friends and neighbors
of yester years.
As was their custom, when moving to a new place, one of the
first things they did as a family, was to join and work in the
Methodist Church. Mr. Nichols purchased a piano while the
children were small and encouraged his daughters to take piano
lessons so they could play for church services. That was his
dream for them and I guess one could day the dream come true for
all three daughters do play for their local churches. Ona, the
youngest, has the best musical education and is organist of the
Asbury Methodist Church in Midland. Opal, the oldest, was
pianist and then organist for thirty years of The First United
Methodist Church in Stanton.
In 1930 Mr. Nichols sold his house in Stanton and his farm
East of Stanton and moved to the Courtney Community. This was
their home until his death in 1940. Opal was married to James
Jones in 1929 and never lived in the Courtney Community. The
other children, Oran, the twins, Elma and Velma and Ona attended
church and school at Courtney until they came to Stanton to
enter High School.
