SELMER

Lo Petree, business manager for the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, with offices in Florence,
Alabama, was a caller at the Independent office Tuesday. Lo was
reared at Ramer, a son of W. A. Petree and wife. He told us of
the narrow escape from death of himself and wife when his car
was struck by a Tennessee Central switch engine in Nashville a
few weeks ago, a picture of which appeared in a recent issue of
the Independent. April 10. 1936

These pictures show the danger in which Lo Petree, wife and two
other occupants of his car were placed when struck by a
Tennessee Central engine in the outskirts of Nashville on April
3, 1936. Mr. Petree was driving a new Ford V-8 Sedan from his
home in Huntsville, Alabama. He failed to see the approaching
train, and was struck on a crossing. Mr. Petree and all the
other occupants were severely hurt, and were taken to the
hospital. He formally lived at Ramer, son of W. A Petree, now
residing in the 9th district. The car was pulled down the
track several hundred feet after the collision and left hanging
as shown at right, about 30 feet from the ground. When rescued
from the dangerous position three occupants were found to be
injured, one seriously, while the fourth escaped unhurt. The
other picture shows how completely one side of the car was
battered in when the freight engine struck it. Date of paper and
name of paper this article appeared in unknown at this time.

December 5, 1991. LO PETREE PASSES

Our hearts were saddened with the passing of Brother Lo
Petree on June 15, 1976. Brother Petree served on the
Childhaven Board of Trustees from 1955 until the time of his
death. He retired more than a dozen years ago from Government
Service. The wisdom and guidance which he brought to the Board
was unsurpassed. He loved children and more especially homeless
children. He made his home in Mobile, Alabama with his wife
Martha. He was buried in Mobile. The Board, Staff and Children
shall miss him and offer our sympathy to his family.

Memphis Baby Plays on Rail, Hit by Train

A three-year-old girl, happy and jubilant, who went with mama Monday "to visit grandma", at Ramer, TN, was killed Tuesday morning when struck by a Mobile and Ohio freight train. Nellita Prather, 3, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loyd P. Prather, 3334 Givens, died almost instantly at 8 a.m. Tuesday when the freight engine struck her while she was sitting on a cross tie. While a hysterical mother is being comforted at the home of "grandma", Mrs. W. A. Petree, an anxious father, who believes his daughter "has been injured", is on his way to Ramer from here. Prather was not told his daughter had been killed when called over long distance telephone from Ramer. No one saw the accident. According to the fireman and brakeman, there was not time to stop the train after the child was seen on the track. The mother was the first to reach the scene from the Petree home, a 100 yards away. She gathered the body into her arms and ran screaming to the house. P.H. Shea, connected with the A. B. Hamm Co., of Ramer, near the tracks where the tragedy occurred told the story. "The first thing I knew, I heard a woman screaming. I ran to the spot. The train had stopped. I went over and saw Mrs. Prather running with the child in her arms."

No arrangements have been made for the funeral. The body will be returned to Memphis, TN
