ILLY CARSON LONG:
KING - Billy Carson Long, 65, died peacefully at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006, after a three-year struggle with cancer. He was born in Stokes County on July 1, 1941, to Launie McKinley and Margaret Inez Moore Long, who both preceded him in death. From the age of 12, Billy began to follow in the footsteps of his father as a jeweler. With his father, Launie, and then with his wife, Bettie, and finally with his own son, Phillip, and daughter, Annette, he worked and operated Long Jewelers of King and Winston-Salem. Every day you could find him working joyfully at his jeweler's bench, meeting and serving the people of King, who he knew by name. It could be said that he kept us all on time. From his mother, Inez, Billy inherited the gift of music. He could play most any instrument, and could tune a piano by ear. He was a member of King High School Band, and in 1958 started his own band, Billy and the King Bees. With Billy playing saxophone, the band was highly sought after, and traveled throughout the southeast playing at the beach, on college campuses, and in clubs. The King Bees retired in 1990, but the band has continued to gather for special occasions. Billy was an active member of King Moravian Church. He was an essential choir member, singing both bass and tenor. He played and directed the Moravian Band for Easter Sunrise services. He served on the Board of Trustees and the Building Committee. He kept all of the pianos of the church in tune. Billy enjoyed serving as a member of the King Chamber of Commerce, the King Jaycees, and the Board of the King District Water System. His interests were broad and varied. His athleticism was expressed in his love for tennis, which he played weekly with dear friends. He loved to play bridge and did so regularly. He was a gifted photographer. On a dark night, you could find him with his grandchildren, gathered around his telescope, as he explained the workings of the heavens. Billy's photograph of the Hale-Bopp comet is displayed in the King Public Library. Billy is survived by his loving family, wife, Bettie Wall Long; two children, Annette Long Covington and husband Martin Davis Covington of King, Phillip Cary Long and wife Pamela Martin Long of Winston-Salem; his brother, Barry Long and wife Linda, of Salt Lake City; his sister Doris Moore and husband John, of Rural Hall. He leaves behind his cherished grandsons, Christian Davis Covington, Matthew Thomas Covington, Jacob Lee Covington, Zachary Martin Long and Nathaniel McKinley Long. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at King Moravian Church, with the Rev. John Giesler, the Rev. William McElveen, and the Rev. Jimmie L. Newsom Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall after the service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in God's Acre. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in honor of Billy's love of music, to the King Moravian Pipe Organ Fund, 228 W. Dalton Rd., King NC 27021, or to the Kate B. Reynolds Palliative CareCenter 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. (Slate Funeral Home)
