Iross@camelot.netcom.net.uk ask "Could anyone answer the following question?
The 7th Earl of Argyll, Archibald Campbell, created Earl in 1584, went overseas
in 1617 and entered service for Phillip of Spain and fought in the Wars with
the States of Holland. He died in 1634. He took with him 3 sons of the Barran
McLea who went overseas with Argyll and never returned to Scotland. The 8th
Earl, his son Archilbald suceeded his father in 1641 and executed in 1661. Phillip
of Spain was an arch-Catholic. In the wars with the states of Holland he was
fighting against European protestants, ancestors of William of Orange. Why would
the MacLeas be in the service of Phillip of Spain? Wouldn't they be fighting
against him? Would anyone be able to answer this question? The three sons of
Barron McLea went on to settle in Ulster! Does anyone know anything further
about this Campbell-McLea (McClay) connection? Regards Ian :)
I don't think that this is our Archibald Campbell but I did not want the information
lost so I included it under this Archibald Campbell born 1511. [Danny A. McBee,
January 16, 1998].
I, Danny A. McBee, received an e-mail from CampbellDJ@aol.com., that stated that
Archibald Campbell was married to Margaret Campbell. I had him married to Agnes.
Her name could have been Margaret Agnes Campbell. [Danny A. McBee, July 12,
1998]. He was married to Agnes Campbell about 1536.
72705. Agnes Campbell
