20. Thomas M. Sparks (1) was born about 1805 in Burke Co., North Carolina. He died about 1870. He was a Farmer. Thomas M. Sparks, farmer, 45, is listed as head of household number 631 in the
Yancey County, North Carolina 1850 Census with wife Mary A., 41, and children
Jeremiah T., 7, Joseph M., 5, Matthew L., 3, Cynthia J., 15, Nancy M., 13, Sarah
A. E. 9, and Mary E., 1. [Danny A. McBee, September 13, 1998].

Listed as E. M. Sparks in the 1870 Mitchell County, North Carolina Census.
Census taker misspelled Cyntha Sparks name Sintha J. Mary E. Sparks is listed
as Nizarah, age 21. There is a Martha L. Sparks, age 23, listed as well as
Thomas M. Sparks, age 17, Jesse Sparks, age 18, and Matilda Sparks, age 9.
The next door neighbor to Thomas M. Sparks was listed as Lewis Cook (Thomas's
wife was Mary Ann Cook). If this was, as I believe, our Thomas Sparks, I did
not have the child Martha L. Sparks listed. Jesse, Matilda and Thomas match.

I found where Thomas M. Sparks was a private in the 58th Regiment of North Carolina Troops, Company A. He was discharged January 14, 1862. Apparently, Thomas M. Sparks was 57 years old when he was discharged from service. [Danny A. McBee, October 27, 2000).

21. Mary "Polly" Ann Cook(1) was born about 1810 in Burke Co., North Carolina. She died about 1880. I, Danny A. McBee, have not done any work on the Cook side of my family. I
feel that Mary is the daughter of Isaac Cook and sister of Lewis Cook. I will
work on this family in the near future. Mary A. Sparks, age 40, is listed as
the wife of Thomas M. Sparks, age 45, in the 1850 Yancey County, North
Carolina Census. Children were:

child i. Cynthia A. Sparks(1) was born about 1835. She died on 4 Dec 1913 in Snow Creek, Mitchell County, N. C.. Cynthia J. Sparks, age 15, shows up in the 1850 Yancey County, North Carolina Census living in the household of Thomas Sparks. [Danny A. McBee, June 15, 1994].

Cintha J. Sparks shows up in the 1860 Yancey County, North Carolina Census, age 26, living in the household of Thomas and Mary Sparkes.

Cynthia Sparks shows up in the 1880 Mitchell County Census living with Jesse
Sparks, her brother. She has a child named Elmira, age 15, as I can read the
census. (I have no idea if the child was legitimate or if Cynthia was married
where the father was at this time).

Cynthia Sparks, age 68, born May 1832, shows up in the 1900 Snow Creek Township, Mitchell County, North Carolina Census living in the household of her brother Thomas Sparks ,48 years old. [Danny A. McBee, May 9, 2000].

Cynthia Sparks shows up in the Mitchell County, North Carolina death records as the daughter of Thomas Sparks. Her death date is December 4, 1913. She apparently never
married. [Danny A. McBee, March 22, 2000].
child ii. Nancy M. Sparks(1) was born in 1837. Nancy M. Sparks, age 13, shows up in the 1850 Yancey County, North Carolina
Census living in the household of her father Thomas M. Sparks, age 45. (Danny

child iii. Sarah Ann Elizabeth Sparks(1) was born in May 1840 in Mitchell County, North Carolina. Sarah Ann was married twice. Sarah A. E. Sparks, age 9, is listed as a child
in the household of her father Thomas M. Sparks, age 45, in the 1850 Yancey
County, North Carolina Census. Sarah McNeill, age 60, born May 1840, widowed,
is listed as head of household in the 1900 Mitchell County, North Carolina
Census with children Alice, 26, Lillie, 22, and George, 19. (Danny A. McBee, May

child iv. Jeremiah T. Sparks(1) was born about 1843. Jeremiah T. Sparks shows up in the 1850 Yancey County, North Carolina Census,
age 7, living in the household of Thomas M. and Mary A. Sparks. [Danny A. McBee].

Jeremiah T. Sparks shows up in the 1860 Yancey County, North Carolina Census,
age 16, occupation farmer, living in the household of Thomas and Mary Sparks.

child v. Joseph Matthew Sparks(1) was born about 1845. Joseph M. Sparks was in the Civil War. he was in the Fifty-Eighth Regiment,
Company K. He enlisted June 10, 1862, Mitchell County, North Carolina. [Danny
A. McBee].

Joseph M. Sparks, age 5, is listed as a child living in the household of his
father Thomas M. Sparks, age 45, in the 1850 Yancey County, North Carolina.

child vi. Matthew "Lewis" Sparks(1) was born on 1 Jan 1847 in Bear Creek, Yancey County, North Carolina. He died on 28 Oct 1920 in Estatoe, Mitchell County, N. C.. He was buried in Big Crabtree Baptist Church, Estatoe, Mitchell County, North Carolina. He was a Farmer.
Matthew L. Sparks, age 3, is listed as a child in the household of his father
Thomas M. Sparks, age 45, in the 1850 Yancey County, North Carolina Census.

There is a Louis Sparks living beside my great grandfather, Jesse M. Sparks,
in Grassy Creek Township, Mitchell County, North Carolina 1880 Census. His
wife is listed as Mary, age 25. Louis is age 34 in 1880. Same age as Matthew
L. Sparks. Shows Polly Sparks, age 62, living with them. I believe that
Matthew L. Sparks and Louis Sparks to be one of the same. My grandmother was
supposedly named Emeline and Matthew L. Sparks also had a daughter Emeline.

Hannah Willis, age 76, also living with the Louis Sparks family in 1880
Census. While visiting the Mocksville, North Carolina, Davie County Public
Library, May 6, 1995, I, Danny A. McBee, found a book entitled "N. C. 1890
Civil War Veterans Census", by Sandra Lee Almasy, 973.7 A. Lewis M. Sparks is
listed in the book in the Crassy Creek section as private, Company A, 3 N. C.,
September 1864 to September 1865, 1 year, PO: Estatoe, North Carolina, "Head,
Eyes and Back". Lewis M. Sparks shows up in the 11th Census, Special Census,
of Surviving Soldiers of the Union Army, 1890, as being a private, L Company,
3rd NC Regiment. He entered September 1864. Discharged September 1865.
Lewis was not a confederate soldier as I previously thought. He was in the
Union Army.

Lewis M. Sparks, age 53, born January 1847, with his wife Mary, age 45,
children Joseph, 15, Magnolia and grandson Lewis Boone, age 5, born July 1894,
is listed in the 1900 Grassy Creek, Mithcell County, North Carolina Census.
(Danny A. McBee). One of Lewis Sparks daughters, Fannie was married to a
Boone.

Lewis M. Sparks, 63, and wife Pollie, 52, is listed in the 1910 Grassy Creek,
Mitchell County, North Carolina Census with son Joseph B., 25, and grandson
Lewis Boone, 16. (Danny A. McBee).

Louis Sparks, 73, and wife Polly, 64, are listed in the 1920 Grassy Creek,
Mitchell County, North Carolina Census with daughter Fannie Boone, 40, grandson
Louis, 25. Also listed was Maude Sparks, 4 6/12, and Grace Sparks, 2 1/2 yrs old.

While visiting the Bakersville, North Carolina Register of Deeds office on September 25, 2000, I found where M. L. Sparks and Mary Green were married on March 10, 1872 by S. M.

child vii. Martha L. Sparks(1) was born about 1847. Martha L. Sparks shows up in the 1860 Yancey County, North Carolina Census,
age 13, living in the Thomas and Mary Sparks household. I think that Martha
L. was a twin to Matthew L. Sparks as they have the same age.
child viii. Mary_(Polly) E. "Nizarah" Sparks (1) was born about 1849. Mary E. Sparks, age 1, is listed in the household of her father Thomas M.
Sparks, age 45, in the 1850 Yancey County, North Carolina Census. (Danny A.
McBee, Sparks descendant and genealogist).
child ix. Thomas M. Sparks(1) was born on 15 Jul 1852. Thomas M. Sparks, age 48, is listed as head of household in the 1900 Mitchell
County, North Carolina Census with children Dock, Bessie, Hicks, and Gertrude.
Thomas is listed as a widow. His sister Cynthia is also living in his house-
