10. Jesse Mason Sparks
(1) was born on 15 Jul 1852 in Yancey
County, now Mitchell Co., N.C.. He died on 1 Apr 1923 in Pasco, Washington,
Franklin County. He was buried in Pasco, Washington, Franklin County. He was
a Farmer. Jesse M. Sparks shows up in the Grassy Creek Township, Mitchell County,
North Carolina 1880 Census with wife, Sarah A., 24, children, Pricy E., 3,
and Docia A., 1, and sister Cyntha Sparks, 41, and her daughter Elmira, age
15. My daddy, Fred McBee, told me, Danny A. McBee, that his grandfather,
Jesse Mason Sparks was a one armed man, having lost his arm in a sugar cane
machine accident as a young boy. I have several pictures of Jesse Mason
Sparks which I treasure. Given to me by my cousin, Maxine Manhas, and father.
Jesse Mason Sparks was named after a minister there in Yancey County named Jesse
Mason. I, Danny A. McBee, found out about Jesse Mason as I searched Yancey County,
North Carolina Marriage Records. Jesse Mason married Samuel B. Sparks and Elmira
McMahan. [Danny A. McBee, July 24, 1998].
Jessie Sparks, age 47, born July 1852, married 24 years, 9 children born, 9 children
surviving, is listed as head of household number 165, in the 1900 Grassy Creek
Township, Mitchell County, North Carolina Census with wife Sarah, 43, born May
1857, and children Robert L., 15, Ella, January 1887, 13, Paul, 10, 1890, Mack,
7, 1892, Willie, 5, May 1895, and Jeferson, 2, April 1898. [Danny A. McBee,
May 12, 2000]. He was married to Sarah A. Howell in 1875/76 in Bear Creek, Yancey
County, North Carolina.

Sarah A. Howell(1) was born in
May 1857 in Yancey County, now Mitchell Co., N.C.. She died on 30 Jan 1921 in
Franklin County, Pasco, Washington. Children were:
5 i.
Pricie Caroline Sparks.
ii.
Docia Alice Sparks(1) was born on 25
Aug 1878 in Bear Creek, Yancey County, North Carolina. She died on 11 Feb 1925
in Ferry County, Republic, Washington. She was buried in Republic Cemetery,
Ferry Co., Washington.
iii.
Martha Agnes (Mattie) Sparks(1) was
born on 29 Aug 1880 in Bear Creek, Yancey County, North Carolina. She died on
3 Oct 1950 in Kitsap County, Bremerton, Washington. She was buried in Salkum
Cemetery, Lewis Co., Washington. I, Danny A. McBee, had the pleasure of visiting
the Salkum Cemetery with my
cousin, Maxine Manhas, in 1993 and seeing the grave markers of some of my
grandmother's people such as her sister Mattie. I always felt sorry for my
grandmother Pricie. After her father, mother, brothers and sisters went to
Washington State she was never able to see them again. I believe they were
all migrated to Washington State before 1914 eighteen years before she died.
iv.
Robert Louis (Bob) Sparks(1) was born
on 20 Nov 1882 in Bear Creek, Yancey County, North Carolina. He died on 12 Jan
1964 in Ferry County, Washington. He was buried in Omak Memorial Cemetery, Omak,
Washington. Robert L. Sparks, 15, born January 1885, is listed as a child in
the household of his father Jessie Sparks, age 47, in the 1900 Grassy Creek Township,
Mitchell County, North Carolina Census. Robert was preparing to move out to
the state of Washington. He was in the state of Washington for the 1930 Census.
[Danny A. McBee, May 12, 2000].
v.
Mary_Ella_(Ella or Dee) Sparks(1) was
born on 25 Jan 1885 in Bear Creek, Yancey County, North Carolina. She died on
8 May 1956 in Lewis County, Washington. She was buried in Salkum Cemetery, Lewis
Co., Salkum, Wa.. Mary Ella Sparks's third marriage to William J. Tucker (which
was also his
third marriage), on Sep 30, 1926, was performed as one-half of a double
wedding ceremony. In the same ceremony, Ella Sparks' niece, Mary Alice
(Silver) Earl, married second to Lyman Earl Adams. (Paul Swofford, Jesse
Sparks and Sarah Howell, A Brief Family History). Hattie McBee Grayson told
me, Danny A. McBee, Andrew Bailey was ran off so Ella could come home and cook
for the family again. Dee met Steve DeBellas while cooking at a hotel. [Danny
A.
McBee, June 7, 1996].
Ella Sparks, age 13, born January 1887, is listed as a child in the household
of her
father Jessie Sparks, age 47, in the 1900 Grassy Creek Township, Mitchell County,
North Carolina Census. [Danny A. McBee, May 12, 2000].
vi.
Charles Paul (Paul) Sparks(1) was born
on 27 Feb 1890 in Bear Creek, Yancey County, North Carolina. He died on 8 May
1958 in Okanogan County, Omak, Washington. He was buried in Omak Memorial Cemetery,
Okanogan County. Paul Sparks, age 10, born February 1890, is listed in household
165 of his father Jessie Sparks, age 47, in the 1900 Grassy Creek Township, Mitchell
County, North Carolina
Census. [Danny A. McBee, May 12, 2000].
vii.
Max Sparks(1) was born on 29 Jul 1892
in Bear Creek, Yancey County, North Carolina. He died on 10 Jul 1962 in Okanogan
County, Omak, Washington. He was buried in Omak Memorial Cemetery, Omak, Washington.
In the 1900 U.S. Census for Mitchell County, North Carolina, Grassy Creek
Township, household of Jessie and Sarah Sparks, a son Mack Sparks is listed,
age 7, dob July, 1892. In the 1910 U.S. Census for Madison County, North
Carolina, West Fork of Ivy Township, household of Jesse M. and Sarah A.
Sparks, a son Mack Sparks is listed, age 17. In both of the above named
census reports, the names of all other members of the Jesse Sparks household
are very accurately given. Thus it appears that Max was a familiar name
which, through usage, became the given name for Mack Sparks, possibly at some
time after 1910. Both the marriage certificate and the death certificate for
this son of Jesse and Sarah Sparks bear the name Max Sparks. (Paul Swofford,
Jesse Sparks and Sarah Howell, A Brief Family History).
viii.
William C. (Bill) Sparks(1) was
born on 13 May 1895 in Bear Creek, Yancey County, North Carolina. He died on
20 Nov 1937 in Lewis County, Washington. He was buried in Salkum Cemetery, Lewis
County, Wa.. Two records on file in the Salt Lake City Genealogical Society
Library list
the family of Jesse M. Sparks and Sarah A. Howell and their 9 children, as we
have listed them herein. One of the records lists a 10th child named Willie
Mae Sparks, date of birth May 13, 1895, the same date of birth as William C.
Sparks. However, the 1900 U.S. Census for the family of Jesse and Sarah
Sparks, Mitchell County, North Carolina, lists a son Willie Sparks, male, age
5, date of birth May 1895. The 1910 U.S. Census for the family of Jesse M.
and Sarah A. Sparks, Madison County, North Carolina, lists a son William C.
Sparks, male, age 14. Thus it appears that Willie Sparks and William C.
Sparks are one and the same person. The other genealogical record, as
mentioned above, also lists a 10th child for Jesse M. Sparks and Sarah A.
Howell, with only the name Baby Sparks, date of birth between 1892-1895, date
of death in the same time period. However, in both the 1900 and the 1910
census reports for the family of Jesse M. and Sarah A. Sparks, it is stated
that Sarah Sparks had given birth to 9 children and that 9 were still living
at the time of the respective census reports. (Paul Swofford, Jesse Sparks
and Sarah Howell, A Brief Family History). There could exist a possibility
that William C. Sparks had a twin whose name was Willie Mae Sparks. A history
of twins seems to have run in the Sparks family. Paul made no reference to
this possibility. It could have solely depended on who was home when the
census taker came by as to whether or not they could have received 100%
correct information. (Danny A. McBee, One Man's Search for Family, Family
Research on the McBee, Dedmond, Click, Sparks, and Todd Families.)
ix.
Jefferson Gilbert (Jeff) Sparks(1)
was born on 15 Apr 1899 in Bear Creek, Yancey County, North Carolina. He died
on 19 Feb 1969 in Centralia, Lewis County, Washington. He was buried in Salkum
Cemetery, Lewis Co., Washington. He had Social Security Number 533-20-8372.
There are two Delayed Certificates of Birth Registration in the name of
Jefferson Gilbert Sparks on file in the Mitchell County Register of Deeds
Office, Bakersville, North Carolina. The first one was filed December 14,
1942 and lists date of birth April 15, 1899. The second was filed June 21,
1943 and lists date of birth April 15, 1898. The 1900 U.S. Census for
Mitchell County, North Carolina, Grassy Creek Township, house #165. enumerates
the household of Jesse and Sarah Sparks and six children, with effective date
June 1, 1900. Jefferson Sparks is listed as male, age 2, date of birth April
1898. (Paul Swofford, Jesse Sparks and Sarah Howell, A Brief Family History).
