22. Garrett D. Howell (1) was born on 12 Feb 1828 in Burke Co., now Mitchell Co., N.C.. He died on 18 Jun 1860 in Yancey County, now Mitchell Co., N.C.. He was buried in Silver Chapel Cemetery, Bandana, N.C.. He was a Farmer. There is a Jeff Howell, age 28, listed in the 1880 Yancey County, North
Carolina Census. He would have been born in 1852. Garrett Howell was 24 in
1852. Jeff could be the brother of Sarah Howell, my great grandmother. Jeff
had a wife, Winnie V., 30, daughter Sarah E., 11, son William A., 7, and son
James R., 4. I have just found the 1860 Yancey Co., N. C. Census and Jeff
Howell was the son of Garrett D. Howell. Garrett Howell, age 32, is listed with his wife Mary, age 30, son Jefferson, 8, daughteer Martha A., 6, son Joseph, age 4, and daughter Sarah, age 2. Garrett Howell was living with his mother Martha Howell in the 1850 Yancey County, North Carolina Census. It is not known at the present time why Garrett D. Howell died so young at the age of only 32. Danny A. McBee, Febraury 10, 2000]. He was married to Mary Emma (Polly) Green in 1851.

23. Mary Emma (Polly) Green(1) was born about 1828 in Burke Co., now Mitchell Co., N.C.. Mary Green, age 22, shows up in the household of her father Arthur Green, age
52, in the 1850 Yancey County, North Carolina Census. Mary (Polly) Green is
my great-great grandmother (Danny A. McBee).

Mary Emma Green is listed as the wife of Arthur Green in Heritage of the Toe River
Valley, Volume II. Her name Emma is underscored. [Danny A. McBee, February
10, 2000]. Children were:

child i. Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Howell(1) was born in Mar 1848 in Mitchell County, North Carolina. Jefferson Howell, age 8, is listed as a child in the household of his father Garrett D. Howell, age 32, in the 1860 Mitchell County, North Carolina Census.

Jefferson Howell, March 1848, 52, is listed as head of household in the 1900 Snow Creek Township, Mitchell County, North Carolina Census with wife Lavinia, April 1847, 53, and daughter Molly, October 1886, 13 years old. [Danny A. McBee, September 15, 1998].

Jeff shows up in the 1920 Mitchell County Census living with his son Robert.
Jeff is 68 and widowed. Jeff is listed as being married to Eliza J. Dean in
Mitchell County, December 15, 1872. Jefferson Howell, age 52, is listed as
head of household in the 1900 Mitchell County, North Carolina Census with his
wife Lavinia, age 53, and daughter Molly, age 13. (Danny A. McBee).
child ii. Joseph Howell(1) was born about 1856 in Mitchell County, North Carolina. He died in 1906. Joseph Howell died in 1906. His wife Buena is listed as head of household in
the 1910 Toe River Township, Mitchell County, North Carolina Census, with her
children Bessie, Lizzie, Charles, Clingman, and Joseph. The census also
states she had 10 children born with 10 children surviving. I, Danny A.
McBee, do not know who the other four children were. I will search longer.
The burned 1890 Census would have listed them for me. (Danny A. McBee).

Joseph Howell, age 4, is listed in the 1860 Mitchell County, North Carolina Census living in the household of his father Garrett D. Howell, age 32. [Danny A. McBee, March 2, 2000].
child iii. Martha Ann Howell(1) was born on 18 Nov 1857 in Mitchell County, North Carolina. She died on 9 Jul 1944. Martha A. Howell, age 6, is listed as a child in the household of her father Garrett D. Howell, age 32, in the 1860 Mitchell County, North Carolina Census. Her father died just shortly after the census was taken. [Danny A. McBee, March 2, 2000].
