Nancy Sparks tombstone in the Bear Creek Cemetery, Mitchell Co., Ledger, N.
C.
is damaged, destroying a portion of the inscription. Her death year cannot be
substantiated 100%. It is the thought of my cousin, Paul Swofford, that the
date is possibly 1877. Nancy Sparks was the daughter of Jeremiah and the
sister of Thomas M. Sparks, Jesse Mason Sparks's father. Nancy Green, age 47,
is listed in the 1850 Yancey Co., N. C. Census living in the household of her
husband Arthur Green. Also listed in 1850 Yancey Census, age 58. (D.McBee).

Thomas Starling
Greene that is mentioned as being the second cousin to Athen Arthur Green,
Sr. in the book entitled "Toe River Valley Heritage" by Lloyd Bailey.
Thomas
Green, age 23, is listed as head of household in the 1850 Yancey County, N. C.

[Danny A. McBee, September 13, 1998].
The following article was taken from The History of the Toe River Valley by
Professor Lloyd Bailey: Arthur Green's eldest son, John C. Greene, was living
in the Red Hill area when the War broke out and slowly made its impact on the
area. He was a farmer, married to Isabella Stewart, and father of at least
nine children. At age 32, this 5' 11 1/2" tall Tarheel was enrolled in
the
Confederate Army on May 16, 1862 at Rock Creek, Mitchell County, North
Carolina, by Captain Jacob W. Bowman. he was mustered-in by Colonel Palmer at
Camp Jackson on June 16, 1862. He was elected to the rank of 1st Lieutenant
in Captain Bowman's N. C. Partisan Rangers, later Company B of the 58th North
Carolina Infantry. John C. Greene obtained the highest rank of all the Greene
families considered here. On January 1, 1863 he wrote a requisition for
clothing for non-commissioned officers and privates commanded by himself in
Captain Bowman's Company: coats August 11/$88.00; pants 8/9/$72.00; shoes
15/5/$75.00. "I certify that the above requisition is correct and that
the
articles specified are necessary for my company. J. C. Greene, Lt. Comdg.
Company B." Whether Lt. Greene ever saw his men in new clothing and shoes
is
unknown. he died on January 18, 1863, at age 32, while the 58th was stationed
at Jacksboro, Tennessee. His brother, Sgt. James Greene, was at his deathbed.
James lived to be 95. After the War, Lt. Greene's widow remarried and had
several more children. (Danny A. McBee, 4131 Grissom Street, Gastonia, North
Carolina, 28056).

1904. He was buried in Bakersville City Cemetery. He had an estate probated
in Bakersville, North Carolina. He was an Attorney, Clk of Sup. Ct.. Little
was written about Jeremiah Green. He was stricken with polio. He was
exempted from the Civil War. However, he lost three of his children to the
war effort. Most of the pension request for Union soldiers were recorded by
the expert legal mind of Jeremiah H. Green. He was one of Bakersville's
leading attorneys. Jeremiah, age 16, is listed in the 1850 Yancey Co., N. C.
Census living in the household of his father Arthur Green, age 52.

became a house carpenter, Curtis, born 1890, Gracy, born May 1891, and Irlus,
born April 1898. (I, Danny A. McBee, did not have these children).
I, Danny A. McBee, am not sure whether Joseph Greene was Joseph Shadrack
Greene that is listed as being a second cousin to Athen Arthur Green in the
book entitled "Toe River Valley Heritage" by Lloyd Bailey. Joseph,
age 13, is
listed in the household of his father Arthur Green, age 52, in the 1850 Yancey

5' 9"
tall, a farmer, and unmarried. He was assigned to Company K of the 58th N. C.
Infantry under Captain Samuel M. Silver. His rank was 3rd Sergeant. At the
Battle of Chickamauga he was wounded and furloughed to his home. He rejoined

xiv.
Stephen Morgan Greene(1) was born about
1846 in Mitchell County, North Carolina. He died on 17 Oct 1864 in Macon, Georgia.
Stephen Green did not return from the Confederate Army and was presumed dead.
Stephen M. Greene, son of Arthur Greene, was seventeen years old when he was
enrolled by M. D. Wiseman to the Mitchell Rangers. Colonel Palmer mustered
him in at Camp Martin on June 10, 1862, the same day as his older brother
James. At 5' 5 1/2" height, he must have whistled a good bit as he was
made
Fifer for Company M of the 58th N. C. Infantry. It appears he may have been
in a local militia as a private from December 30, 1861 to his muster date.
During this early service he was appointed Fifer on February 11, 1862, and did
not receive his bounty money for that duty. He later received bounty money
totalling $60.00 by the Spring of '62. In late 1862 he obtained a thirty day
furlough and was a couple of months late in returning. Once back in line with
the 58th he was either killed in battle or died of disease on October 17,
1864, in Macon, Georgia, far from his home on Snow Creek. (This article was
taken from Toe River Valley Heritage by Lloyd Bailey and copied by Danny A.
McBee, Greene descendant and genealogist). Stephen, age 6, is listed as a
child in the 1850 Yancey County, North Carolina Census living in the household
of his father Arthur Green. Stephen, age 14, is listed as a child in the 1860
Yancey County, North Carolina Census living in the household of his father
Arthur Green. (Danny A. McBee, June 11, 1997).
xv.
Samuel P. Greene(1) was born about
1848 in Mitchell County, North Carolina. He died on 6 Dec 1864 in Knoxville,
Tennessee. He was buried in U.S.A. General Hospital. He was a Farmer/Soldier.
Samuel Green did not return from the Confederate Army during the Civil War and
was presumed dead.
The following article is taken from The Toe River Valley Heritage Book written
by Professor Lloyd Bailey: Samuel P. Greene was the youngest son of Arthur
Green tojoin the Civil War. He was enlisted to Company A, 58th N. C. Infantry
on March 30, 1863 by Colonel Palmer for the duration of the War. Confederate
records are somewhat missing for much of that year, but Private Greene
appeared on the Muster Roll for September/October. He was sent to hospital at
Knoxville on August 24, 1863. His illness was unspecified, but Samuel had
other plans. Recruitment for the Union Army was going on in the early Spring
of "64. The 3rd N. C. Mounted Infantry, headed by Colonel George W. Kirk,
was
busy doliciting Confederate deserters, draft dodgers, the disaffected, and
genuine Union sympathizers. Kirk's firepower advantage was possession of
seven and eight shot Spencer repeating rifles. Rebel Samuel Greene had
proceeded to the Knoxville Hospital by way of his native North Carolina
mountains. He switched sides on March 25, 1864 in Burnsville when he enlisted
for three years. 1st Lieutenant Garrett Honeycutt of the 3rd described hom as
born in Mitchell County, a farmer, 5' 7", black eyes, dark hair, and dark
complexion. Again a Private, Greene would receive a $300.00 boundy and was
paid $54.00 for his clothing. The 3rd was officially organized at Knoxville
in June 1864. In that year it scouted and patrolled about Knoxville and in
East Tennessee. By September Private Greene was promoted to Corporal of
Company E. His prior Confederate service was not recorded by the Union
scribes, nor was he ever listed as a deserter by the Rebels. However, one
ilness he probably experienced caught up with him in Tennessee. He died of
chronic diarrhea at the U. S. A. General Hospital in Knoxville on December 6,
1864. His parents back in North Carolina regarded him as a son that went to
War and was never heard of again. (Copied by Danny A. McBee, Green descendant
and genealogist). Samuel Green, age 5, is listed in the 1850 Yancey County,
North Carolina Census as a child living in the household of his father Arthur
Green. Samuel, age 12, is listed in the 1860 Yancey County, North Carolina
Census living in the household of his father Arthur, age 63. (Danny A. McBee,
Green and Sparks descendant and historian, June 11, 1997).
