1. Early Victorian pioneers, A Catherine McCan is recorded as dying in 1859, aged 77. No details are given but the age of 77 would indicate a birth-year of c. 1883 which would seem more likely than the year of 1790 calculated from age 31 in the 1821 census. It also fits in with the voyage of Joseph to Melbourne in 1861, when he returned with books which had been in the possession of his father and presumably later of his mother.
