For the purposes of this web page the spellings McCargar and McCarger are treated as two variations on a single surname. Since McCargar is the most common spelling in the United States and Canada, I will use that speling, without assuming it is either older or more correct. Both of these spellings are very old, and one must research both spellings, since computerized sources treat them separately.
Most but not all McCargars (McCargers) in the United States and Canada descend from a common ancestor--one Thomas McCargar,a private in the 21st Regiment pf Foot who came to Quebed in late May or early June, 1776. He and his brother, Joseph, fought under Geneeral Carleton in 1776 and under General Burgoyne in 1777, surrendering with Burgoyne's army at Saratpga on October 17, 1777.
More to Follow. A hearty welcome to all who are interested in McCargar (McCarger) research. Robert S McCargar rsmccargar@hotmail.com
