Military Service:
27th Mississippi Infantry
Company K -- Enfield Rifles, aka Enfield Riflemen (raised in Monroe County, MS) [formerly Co. B, 5th Battalion MS Infantry]. Company comprised of "sharp shooters." Under the command of Major General Braxton Bragg the 27th was originally redesignated in Pensacola, Florida from other Mississippi companies present in 1861. Battles likely included (defense of) Vicksburg [ordered from Pensacola, FL to Vicksburg December 1861-May 9, 1862]. Staggered garrisons left Vicksburg in April 1862, marched near Mobile, Alabama. 27th Mississippi Infantry was stationed at Mobile from April 1862 to August 1862 [when ordered to Tennessee]. Thomas Benton McKinney likely contracted measels and between Vicksburg and Mobile (April and August), dying in the latter area according to rolls.
