Includes NotesNotes for Isaiah Van Zandt:
Born in Georgetown, Scotts County, KY. He was 57 years old in the 1850 Census. He was listed as a gunsmith. He had moved from Stamping Ground, KY to Jacksonville, IL in time for the 1850 census, probably between the births of the twins (1834 in KY) and Harriet (1838 IL).

Per Gary VanZandt (2001) and from "The Kentucky Gazette, 1787-1800: Genealogical and Historical Abstracts": "Edward West (his house and shop were on opposite corners of Washington and Hamilton Streets in Georgetown, KY) was a gunsmith who taught his trade to his nephew Lynn West who, in turn, taught the trade to his son Lewis. Besides being a gunsmith, Lynn West was a silversmith, investor, war hero and horseman. He was a breeder and racer of thoroughbred horses and owned a race track, called Gano track, on the north edge of Georgetown, KY which was the setting for many a famous contest.

What does all this have to do with the Vanzants? It tells us why and how Isaiah became a gunsmith. As a youth, Isaiah was obviously offered a job as an apprentice for Lynn West and accepted it. That is why he doesn't appear in Stamping Ground as a teenager. Also, Isaiah's move from Ky to IL seems to coincide with the death of his likely employer Lynn West who died on Jan. 26, 1836. Isaiah probably lost his job when Lynn died so Isaiah decided it was time to move and start his own gunsmith shop rather than work for Lynn's son Lewis. Another interesting thing is that Lewis West's father-in-law James H. Mahoney was a popular tavern keeper. Could it be that it was at Mahoney's tavern that several of Isaiah's children were born? The family Bible says that two of Isaiah's sons where born in a tavern four miles out of town."

Isaiah worked in Georgetown from about 1806-1836.
