 Includes NotesNotes for Jean Baxter:
Jean is the Scottish form of Jane. Tradition related to Jane Baxter as told to Clarabell Davis by Mary Keddle Kaurish of Somerset, Pulaski Co., KY in 1983. Mrs. Kaurish is a descendant of the Phillips line.

It seems that Jane (Jean) Baxter was a Scottish girl who was stolen from her family at age 11 and brought to this country entering port at New York. She was then sold to a doctor whose name was something like Menifee. For years she worked for the family, eventually becoming the family knitter, because of her ability along this line. She lived to be 117 and is supposed to be buried in Lincoln Co., KY on the "old Hendrickson Place". Mrs. Kaurish was not sure of the name but said it was something like that. This backs up oral tradition in Nan Hoeke family of a Scottish ancestor, and tradition in Betty Mayfield family of a "grandmother" who had been from Scotland and was an indentured servant. It is doubtful there is much chance of finding proof of Jane Baxter's parentage.
