John W. Mayfield (son of Issac Mayfield and Isabella Southerland) was born Abt. 1721 in Essex County, Virginia, and died February 20, 1781 in Union, York County (now Union), South Carolina. He married Mary Delia Bracken on Abt. 1741 in Caroline County, Virigina.

John was elected to the General Assembly in SC and took his seat Feb. 1, 1780. He was a member of the Tories, he was also a store owner and a constable and a Captain in the Militia. John had seven sons and they were all in the American Revolution. One son was killed in the American Revolution. John was also a Sheriff of Russell Co., VA. After John was married he moved to Union Co., SC and took a land grant #13(Feb. 1768 of 100 acres on broad river in what was then a part of Berkley Co., SC now Union Co., SC. John Mayfield joined the Loyalist and was shot in the back of the head and was killed on Feb. 20, 1782. He held rank of Captain in the Loyalist Army. John was murdered by the Whigs by a Captain John Hood.
