Thomas Baccus (b. 1786, d. April 1850)
Thomas Baccus was born 1786 in England, and died April 1850 in McIntosh County, Georgia. He married Mary Fontan, daughter of Fredrick Fontan and Clara.
Notes for Thomas Baccus:
1830 Federal Census of Nassau county, Florida: Thomas' last name was spelled Backhouse
1840 Federal Census of McIntosh County, Georgia: Spelled Baccus
1850 Georgia Census of Deaths: Spelled Backhouse
According to Phebe Trumps VanArsdale, Thomas Baccus of Fernandina, Florida married Mary Fontan but the date is not known. The Diocese of St. Augustine has no record of the marriage.
Thomas was 44 yrs old and without a wife when he lived in Fernandina, Florida in 1830. Mary Elizabeth Baccus was his youngest child and according to her age given in the 1850 Federal Census of Nassau County, she was born in 1822 - so that her mother, Mary Fontan Baccus, must have died then or shortly thereafter.
Thomas' neighbor in 1830 Was was Clara Fontan who was then 48 yrs old and according to Phebe Trumps VanArsdale, was Mary Elizabeth Baccus' grandmother.
After 1830 Thomas moved to McIntosh County, Georgia, where he was employed as a overseer. he brought his son with him but must have left Mary in the care of her grandmother, Clara Fontan, since the 1840 Federal Census of McIntosh County shows only Thomas as Head of Household, age 50 - 60 (he was 54 years old), with one male, age 15 to 20 yrs., in his household.
In the 1830 Federal Census of Nassau County, Florida, this boy was listed as age 5 to 10 yrs and Mary Elizabeth as a female under 5 yrs. If Mary Elizabeth knew her correct age when she gave it to the census taker in 1850, she was born either in late 1822 or before Nov. 1823, so she should have been listed in the 5 to 10 yr category rather than the under 5 category or else she was actually only 24 or 25 in 1850. The motherless Mary Elizabeth seems to have been brought up from a early age by Clara Fontan who became her surrogate mother.
