68. Funeral Notice for William L. Kilroy, Sr.(Continued), Savannah Morning News - April 6, 1951 - Page 26, last Nov. 29, to William K. Barrett, director of the Georgia State Veterans' Service: "As this year draws to a close, one of my most pleasant duties is to report to you on the splendid work done in and through the Police Court of Savannah by our good friend, Mr. William L. Kilroy, prison contact representative of your agency. "I want you to know that one of the most satisfying expreiences that I have had is the association with Billy Kilroy in his efforts in to serve his buddies, as he regards all veterans. His understanding, patience, warm sympathy and determination have helped and straightened out many veterans who had made mistakes or who have been the victims of circumstances. Not one of them, regardless of race, creed or color, is unimportant to Kilroy. I want you to know that he has been a great source of comfort and assistance to me. After all, all the judge can do is to put somebody in jail or turn him loose; a Police Court judge does not have any probation officers or any official method to assist him in rehabilitation, probation, or any of the other necessary social services which are the by-produce of a criminal court. I must depend upon volunteer assistance for every thing which I cannot do myself. Mr. Kilroy is my strong right arm in everything connected with veterans, and when I refer anything to him, I comfortably forget all about it. "I have no statistics to report to you. Frankly, I am not interested in statistics, but I am interested in human beings. As one who serves his fellowman, Bill Bilroy's name is second to none."
69. News Paper Article - William L. Kilroy, Sr., Savannah Morning News - Friday, April 6, 1951, Page 6, Veterans in this area suffered a distinct loss yeaterday in the death of William L. Kilroy, special rehabilitation officer of the Georgia Department of Veterans' Service. Mr. Kilroy, to a greater extent perhaps than any other Savannahian, devoted his life to the interests and welfare of former GI's and doughboys. A veteran of the First World War, he was prominently connected with the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreigh Wars, the Forty-and-Eight, the Disable American Veterans, the Veterans' Council of Administration, and other groups dedicated to the well being of former servcie men. A native Savannahian, he had, during his sixty-three years of life, won the respect and admiration of a host of friends and associates. But in the eyes of countless veterans who were the beneficiaries of his unselfish service, a new and special significance has been added to the legendary name made famous in the inscription " Kilroy Was Here."

Harris, chairman of the Veterans' Council, issued the following statement concerni9ng the death of Mr. Kilroy: "The veterans of America have lost one of their greatest friends in the death of Bill Kilroy. "Bill was known from coast to coast and was a familiar and powerful figure at national conventions of the American Legion and the V.F.W. "He was widely known and recognized for his great work in behalf of veterans-long before the name Kilroy became a legend in the services. "In the death of Billy Kilroy, the community has lost not only a sterling character but has, in fact been deprived of an Institution. "As chairman of the Veterans' Council, of which Billy Kilroy was one of the founders, I offer our profound sympathies to his family; out sympathy goes likewise to the many thousands of veterans who have lost their greatest advocate.
119. Death Notice - Willaim L. Kilroy, Sr., Savannah Evening Press - "He Served the Veterans", Veterans of the armed services of the United States had no person more active in their intersts than was William L. Kilroy of Savannah, who died this morning. A veteran of World War I, and with a name that brought him a lot of good-natured attention from the veterans of the war in which the lengendary Kilroy made his fame, Mr. Kilroy never let lpass an opportunity to be of service to his comrades. The news that his illness terminated this morning in the death of Mr. Kilroy was received with regret and sadness by all who knew him and the many who had been the benefieiaries of his kindly interest.

172. Obituary for Clara Rotureau, Savannah Morning News, Saturday, November 26, 1983, page 12A, Mrs. Clara Rotureau Horton, 93, a resident of Jesup who assisted in placing the first transcontinental telephone call died Thursday at Wayne Memorial Hospital here after a long illness. Mrs. Horton played her role in telephone history on Jan. 25, 1915, as a telephone operator for Southern Bell. The call went from Jekyll Island to San Francisco and was passed through Jesup, where Mrs. Horton was stationed for the call. According to an interview she gave to a newspaper in Jesup in November, Mrs. Horton put the call from Jekyll through to New York when it was placed by an American Telephone and Telegraph executive named Vail. "Please don't say I made that (call)," she said during the interview. "Please say that I helped, for that is just what I did. "I had a piece of wire about this long (she indicated about 12 inches) with a blug on each end," she said. "When Mr. Vail rang, I put his call through to New York. I just plugged in both ends of that wire I held. That was all. But it was a marvelous feeling for all of us." Family members said Friday that whenever Vail went to Jekyll, he insisted that Mrs. Horton be in Jesup to handle his telephone calls. "She lived and worked in Savannah, but he always made sure she was there (in Jesup) when he made important calls (from Jekyll)," one family member said. Mrs. Horton was a native of Chatham County and had been a resident of Jesup for 71 years. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mildred H. Goettler of Savannah and Mrs. Anne H. Mitchell of Jesup; a son, Homer S. Horton of Jesup; and 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Rosary service: 7 p.m. today at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home in Jesup.
