The community of Benston was named to honor Adam Benston, an early settler of Pierce County. He was born in Scotland in 1824 and died on March 25, 1912. He was employed by the Hudson's Bay Company and later served as a mail carrier. (The Tacoma Times, November 27, 1939).
Benston is fourteen miles east of Roy and was originally called Huntersville. Mrs. Isabel Carlson, daughter of Mr. Benston, wrote that when the post office department requested the name of an old settler the name of her father was chosen. (Meany, p. 18). The post office was established February 11, 1892 and was discontinued August 13, 1916. (Ramsey, Pierce County, p. 54).
