His military occupational specialty was listed as Airplane Crew Chief. He served his country for six years and three months. He wrote Article printed in a booklet,"The Old Timers Talk about the Early History on FL Keys in 1972 in Marathon, FL. (17) "I REMEMBER WHEN"......By Billy Parrish
When our family came to Marathon, from Dania and via Lower Matacumbe, in 1927, there just wasn't much in the entire middle Keys. Here in Marathon, I remember, the Florida East Coast Railroad depot was located about where the Electric Co-op office is now. In back of the depot was a spur of track that ran out into Boot Key Harbor. On the trestle that ran into the harbor Mr. Crosland had a fish house built and that was our reason for being in Marathon. My father, William Allen Parrish, had come down to manage the fish house. This fish house was located off Logan Island or about at the end of 30th street. There was no school the year we came to Marathon. However one was opened not long after our arrival. It was a frame building standing just about where the new Stanley Switlik school is now. The boardwalks that connected most of the buildings in the community during the construction of the railroad were still in use in 1927. These were gradually done away with due to rot and due to the need for firewood in the wood burning stoves most of the families here used at that time. The big event each day was the arrival of the passenger train from Miami in the morning, and again in the evening as it returned from Key West. Some years after we arrived here, a road of sorts, was built to connect Miami to Key West. This road used ferry boats to make the bigger water crossing. In marathon we used to watch the cars race from the ferry landing on Grassy Key to the dock located on the west end of Key Vaca. This was a twelve mile trip for the cars and they had to almost race to make the schedule. Sometimes it did no good to hurry because after leaving the dock the ferry boat, going to No Name Key might get grounded during a low tide and have to wait for high water. Quite often we would load up family and friends for a boat trip and picnic to one of the nearby islands. Duck Key was one of the favorite places to go. One night everyone voted to go on to Cape Sable. We made the trip during the night and looked for turtles on the white sand beaches of the Cape. Hunting was a great thing on the Keys, too. We used to ride on the fenders of our cars along the stretch of road that ran between the ferry slips and flush out doves. These birds were here by the thousands. This always gave us a reason to have a cook out dove feast. One year my father decided to farm tomatoes. His huge tomato patch was on the bay in the area behind Ted & Mary's. The crop was great, the packing house was busy crating the tomatoes that were shipped to the Northern market. I don't know that my father made any money as a farmer though. For sports we would play tennis. The railroad had built tennis courts on packed, solid marl at about where the new school is now. (This writing by Billy has been copied without paragraph indents due to limited space.) He was cremated in Jun 1990 in Big Pine Crematory-ashes in Gulf Mx.. He died on 15 Jun 1990 in Miami, FL--Miami Heart Institute. (18) William Allen "Billy" PARRISH, Jr. passed away on June 15, 1990, at Miami Heart Institute. His death was attributed to pancreatic cancer. He was educated in Miami, FL. Billy Parrish attended school in Dania Florida until his parents moved to Marathon in the Florida Keys...A one room school house was disassembled and re-assembled in Marathon and Mrs Sue M Moore taught classes. Billy later went to Miami where he lived with a sister and attended Miami High School.
In 1960 Billy commuted to Miami, Florida, living during the weekdays with Clark D. Perez while he attended a course in Real Estate and attaining his licence. He has reference number 5. He had these health problems Cancer: Pancreatic/Skin ; Heart Disease; Colon Polyps; Cataracts. He had Social Security Number 266-07-4725. He was named after William Allen PARRISH Sr.. He was a Commercial Fisherman/Business Owner/Realtor/Monroe County Employee. Upon returning to Marathon Billy engaged in commercial fishing. He owned and operated his own boat called "The Jeep". He later bought and owned the first full service gas station located on the south end of Marathon. Later he and his wife bought another Gulf station located on Overseas Hwy and Sombrero Beach Road. After suffering a massive heart attack in 1962 he sold his service stations and went into the Real Estate business with his father. Since Real Estate was not what he really enjoyed, he became involved with other ventures such as working for the County of Monroe in the Zoning Dept., owning a franchise to sell "Ted's Sheds", and driving a school bus for the Marathon School dist. William Allen "Billy" PARRISH, Jr., was the son of William Allen PARRISH, Sr. and Mary Eveline SPARKMAN. After "Billy" served in the military he and his wife Marion Viola PEREZ decided they wanted to return to civilian life and settle in Marathon in the Florida Keys.
Billy was 5'7-3/4" tall with sky blue eyes, and medium complexion. As a young man he was very slender, although later in life he had to watch his weight; he was stocky but not over weight. He first experienced weight problems when he quit smoking at the age of 37. He often said he wished that he had never picked up a cigarette when he was a young man...as he felt that his early smoking habit had caused most of his later health problems.
Billy was treated for skin cancer for many years before his death in 1990; his death was diagnosed as "Pancreatic Cancer". He had also suffered a heart attack in 1961 at the early age of 43. In February of 1990 he suffered a massive heart attack and was advised to go Miami Heart Institute by his Dr., Jack Eisenbarth, to undergo tests for blockage and assess the damage done to his heart. He was then scheduled for by-pass surgery in May...he never left the hospital as he never recovered from the surgery. A staph infection that was contacted in Fisherman's Hospital during his Feb. attack had re-occurred after his heart surgery and he had to be re-opened to cleanse the infection ...it was later said that the staph had gone into his bone. He passed away on June 15, 1990 and his death was attributed to Pancreatic Cancer, which had mestisized, and a Staph infection.
