Notes for J
AMES ENOCH SPIRES:
The origins of this Spires family are not known at this time. It is likely that they were Borders Scots, resettled betwenn 1650 and 1700 by King VI of Scotland, who would become after unification, King James I of England. Fearing that these "unruly" clans threatened an orderly conjoining of the two countries, it was imperative that the Border Code be broken up and the Clans dispersed. Some were outlawed anad banished to Ireland, others directly to the colonies in the New World. A number of those sent to Ireland were given land grants provided they undertook to remain Protestant,. They became known as the "Undertakers" and did quite well. Many, however, were dissatisfied with life in Ireland and preferred to risk the New World. They sailed westward in an armada of ships known as "The White Sails," among them The Hector, The Rambler and The Dove. The North Atlantic was not an easy passage. Some ships lost thirty to forty percent of their passengers before they reached their destination. The first immigrant with a name similar to Spires or Spiers was one Robert Speare who settled in Virginia in 1653.
Whether there is a connection, I cannot say. Our story begins in North Carolina and becomes more detailed in the 1850 and 1860 Federal Census, District #5, Scott County, Mississippi
