LONOKE - Joseph "Bo" Norfleet Eagle passed away at his family home June 10, 2006, at the age of 83. His wife, Janet Mashburn Eagle, the love of his life, preceded him in death. He had three children, James N. and Maj. Britt Eagle of Monterey, Calif., Catheron Eagle Oviatt and Bill of Lander, Wyo., and Gene and Doris Eagle of North Little Rock, Ark. He was blessed with seven grandchildren, Nathan Eagle, Lauren Eagle Walker, Qwenton Oviatt, Clare Eagle, John Eagle, Hollyen Oviatt and Ben Oviatt. Mr. Eagle graduated from Lonoke High School with the class of 1941 and was a grduate from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946. While a midshipman, he saw naval action in WWII. After graduation he chose to serve his country with a distinguished 20-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps. As a Marine officer he led U.S. armed forces in the Korean War and was on the front line of defence serving his country at the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the War in Vietnam. Mr. Eagle retired from the Marines at the rank of Major in 1966.
His military career took him around the world and he willingly relocated his family from state to state to the new stations that were assigned. He and his wife, Janet, maintained friendships with people around the globe whom they had met through their work and travel. Mr. Eagle was an instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy and worked in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. where he was responsible for purchasing of military arms and machinery for the Marine Corps. H was an expert marksman as a marine and he taught others this science and skill. Mr. Eagle was also an accomplished pilot, a skill he honed in the military and used later in life after his retirement from the Marine Corps
Bo was athletic and strong. He was a starting lineman for the football team in high school and in college. After graduation from Annapolis he also played semi-professional football.
He never missed watching the annual Army vs. Navy football game. He was an outdoor sportsman who sought out the opportunity to hunt and fish. He was an avid horseracing fan his entire life and at age 83 made every weekend during the 2006 meet at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark.
Mr. Eagle believed in the value of education. He worked his whole life so that his children and grandchildren would have the opportunity to advance and achieve to the maximum of their potential through education. Even when his health was failing, he made the effort to attend the graduations of his grandchildren from college and post-graduate institutions across America. On June 4, 2006, Bo was able to attend his 60th college reunion at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
After retiring from the military, he came home to Lonoke to raise his family and to build and grow a family business in agriculture. He excelled at this through partnering, collaboration and reinvestment in the land. He was a knowledgeable and shrewd investor in real estate and in the financial markets.
Mr. Eagle loved Lonoke and Arkansas. He was a scholar of our history and relished in telling stories of family, of business and of political events that had happened during his life. In his retirement, he devoted his time to preserve the Lonoke Cemetery and the Whitley Cemetery in Lonoke County and historic Williamson Creek Cemetery in Austin, Texas where an ancestor is buried.
