HARLES WILLIAM "CHUCK" CUNNING:
HIS HISTORY WON'T EASILY BE FORGOTTEN

Chuck Cunning was a story teller to his bones. Mostly, the stories were
from history, his own or Arkansas. He was a "Son of Lonoke," which is
what he titled a slim volume of reminisces.
He wrote them long, he wrote them short. Sometimes he turned them into poetry, like "Gulf Deserted," about revisiting his late father's deserted gas station. "Bypassed years ago by the four-lane, now only
wasps, spiders and dallis grass fight over its two rusting pumps standing at attention stuck on 29.9."
He wrote of his 12th birthday, when a tornado killed more than 100 people, and he wrote of his beautiful Sophia, "the prettiest, forty-nine two-door Ford sedan I ever saw." On the day he was 7, that his cousin
Eddie nearly drowned and of dancing on Steve Stephens' television show and of how the first time he went, he slipped in with counterfeit tickets.
In "To Kill a Medowlark," he told of the day he and his kid brother Les did just that and of the consequence:" It was my first kill, and I gathered up the limp bird and we hurriedly ran home to show it to Mother, but she showed no signs of praise." She sent the brothers to their room and an hour later, summoned them for supper. "When you finish this, go back to your rooms, she said ...There on two plates were two small portions of fried meadowlark. "Les was sobbing quietly...I gulped back my tears and reluctantly took a bite. It was as bitter as acorns. Through the screen door I could hear the lonesome call of a songbird..."
He wrote about the day his father was moving their sister JoEllyn's prized piano with a mirrow over the keys to their new house and it fell out of the pickup. A month later, a used piano arrived from Searcy. "The keys were worn from years of playing. Many deep scratches shone through heavy coats of furniture wax," Chuck wrote in A Son of Lonoke.
"Jo Ellyn looked at it momentarily then covered her face and ran to her room. Mother looked at Daddy and said, 'She'll be okay.' Later that night after everyone had gone to sleep I was awakened by a low plinking sound...
It was my sister, sitting at the piano quietly playing 'Shine on, shine on Harvest Moon...""

Four day ago, early in the morning, Chuck sent one e-mail, went for a walk and prepared a bowl of cereal, his sister told me Monday. He was supposed to report to his part-time job at 8 a.m.
In Chuck's death at home on Saturday morning, history has repeated itself: "Dr. Holmes' call from Lonoke came to me at the pharmacy early in the morning, and I was stunned," Chuck wrote in A Son of Lonoke.
"Charles, it's your father. He died this morning of a massive heart attack."
Chuck leaves Patty, his wife of 41 years; daughters, Caron Grisham and Kristy Stevenson; grandchildren, Shelby and Matthew Grisham and Blake Stevenson; sister JoEllyn Duke Moore; and brother Les.

And a truckful of stories.
