Notes for J
EFFERSON JOSEPH TERRY:
Jefferson Joseph Terry left home in 1863 at the young age of 16 to join his brother, Joseph Sterling Terry in the Confederate Army, as a bugle boy, saying he was 18 years old. He was signed up and placed in Company "B", Perkins Battalion Infantry Regiment C.L.A. someplace in Missouri. The state was divided, part were for the North and part were for the South. When the war ended he was in Mississippi and there he married Phoebe Nolan, a widow, her husband having been killed in the first part of the war. Phoebe and her daughter, Ada Nolan lived in Redwood, MS. There she and Jefferson's first child, Robert Bea Terry was born, then a daughter, Maud Moore Terry was born. Phoebe died in 188l. Jefferson left Redwood, MS soon after her death to arrange with his parents to care for the children. He returned about three years later and took Bea and Maud to his parents in Moberly, Randolph Co., Missouri. Ada Nolan remained in Redwood, Mississippi. Bea and Maud Terry stayed in Missouri with their grandparents and Jefferson left for Indian Territory, OK. The children remained in Missouri until 1890 when Jefferson returned and took them to Indian Territory, OK. Jefferson had remarried to Dora Payton, a widow with 5 children, 4 of whom died of diphtheria. Dora ran a rooming house and Jefferson had a livery stable. From this union Beulah and Joe were born in 1892 and 1894. Dora died soon after Joe's birth. About 1898 he married Josephine Gardner, part Choctaw Indian, from Oklahoma. Their children were Arthur, Louis, Agnes and Myrtle Lee Marie Terry. Jefferson Joseph Terry became a U.S. Marshal in Indian Territory, OK, where he also owned and operated a livery stable. All his children grew up in a community some two miles north of what is now Hugo, OK.

Jefferson Joseph Terry served in the Confederate Army, it was also rumored that he rode with Quantrill of MIssouri. He was a school teacher as a young man, owned a boarding house and liverly stable, was a U. S. Marshal and a farmer. He worked with his son-in-law Samuel Bailey Spring to survey and sell lots in Hugo. All of his children had much love and respect for him, and affectionally addressed him as PaPa or "Mr. Terry"
