Joseph Taylor "Joe T." Robinson was born July 26, 1872, northwest of Lonoke, Arkansas. He attended Lonoke County schools, where he later taught after passingthe teachers' examination at the age of 17.
In 1913, Robinson resigned his seat in Congress and was inaugurated as governor two days later. The sudden death that year of Sen. Jeff Davis left a vacancy in the U.S. Senate. Less than two weeks after his inauguration, Robinson was elected by the state Legislature to succeed Davis. He resigned the governorship in March 1913. Robinson had the distinction of being congressman, governor and senator-elect all within 14 days.
He was also the last U.S. Senator in the nation elected by a state legislature.
During his few months as governor, Robinson actually accomplished quite a bit. He helped to pass a corrupt-practices act and establish a state banking department. He also aided in the formation of a bureau of labor statistics and a highway commission within the state land department. He obtained approval for the construction of dams across unnavigable waterways to harness hydro-electric power, a stipulation for the electrocution of capital criminals, $500,000 for the completion of the capitol, and the adoption of a state flag.
Robinson died from a heart attack on July 14, 1937. President Roosevelt, paying tribute to Robinson, is quoted as saying, "A pillar of strength is gone, a soldier has fallen with face to the battle." He was buried in Roselawn Memorial Park in Little Rock, Arkansas
