Ancestors of Virtuland Richard BAGLEY

Generation No. 4

      8. James BAGLEY, Sr., born 1769 (Source: Montville, ME Vital Statistics.); died 08 07 1825 in Montville, ME Bolan Hills Cemetary. He was the son of 16. Jacob BAGLEY and 17. Mary or Molly ?. He married 9. Abigale TOLLBRID 06 06 1799 in Montville, ME.

      9. Abigale TOLLBRID, born 1772 in Maine; died 02 23 1860 in Montville, ME Bolan Hills Cemetery. She was the daughter of 19. Elizabeth CROMWELL.

Notes for James BAGLEY, Sr.:
Marriage information and children's information from Vital Statistics, Montville, ME except where noted. Children from Samuel down is in Some Descendants, but not Montville records and the source given for all is family records. the only exception is Richard where birth comes from tombstone in Montville and death from Liberty, ME records.

  Notes for Abigale TOLLBRID:
Her name is spelled "Abigail" in town records and census records we have found. However, I have a copy of a letter she wrote to her daughter, Mary, that is signed "Abigale." The letter is transcribed below. My copy was sent by a descendent of Mary Bagley Sawyer.
Abigale was the person we had thought was Indian. She was variously listed as Tollard, Tallbird, Tollbird, etc. Montville Vital Stats gives her name as Tollbrid. The Liberty town history (pub. 1927) gives her name as Cromwell and states she is the daughter of Elizabeth Cromwell. The Sawyer family has a family legend that may explain why both facts can be true. (Abigale's daughter Mary married a Sawyer.) See notes for Elizabeth Cromwell for this story.
The 1860 Liberty Mortality Schedule shows that Abigale died at age 87 of consumption. This also gives Abigale's birthplace as Maine. Elizabeth is buried beside James and Abigale in the Bolan Hills Cem. in Montville.

"Montville Plantation August the 7th, 1825
My Dear child I take this opportunity to inform you that your father is dead. Died this morning about sunrise. He was taken (or stricken?) last Sunday morning a week ago this morning and we expect to put him into the ground tomorrow at one o'clock. He was taken with a disorder called the colery monbasi (?). I have seen a great Deal of trouble but never knowed what trouble was before til I lost my Dear husband and friend. Dear child I know this will be verry heavy news to you your father was making ready to come and see you next week but it was otherways Determined with the Lord, the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away and blessed be the Lord. I have great reason to thank god that I enjoy my health as well as usual and all the rest of my family. It is verry sickly in the Plantation and all other towns around both far and near with this same Disorder. I would inform you that there is but few that can say they are well and it is a verry malencolly time. I hope these few lines will find you and your familys in good health. I Received your letter Dated June the 6th and was verry glad to hear that you was all well. I want you to let Betsy and Thomas know of the Death of your father as soon as posible and tel them that we are yet in the land of the living. I want you all to come and see us as soon as you can I want you to come up and see us this fall if possible. I want you to come without fail (or fear?) So I remaine your affectionate Mother----------Mary Sawyer. (signed) Abigale Bagley"

Children of James BAGLEY and Abigale TOLLBRID are:

ii.   Mary Bagley, born 05 10 1801; died 1851; married Daniel Sawyer.
  Notes for Mary Bagley:
Montville town records show a Polly, not a Mary, as a child of James and Abigail Bagley. Mom has Polly married to Jacob Leeman and as a twin to Mary. However, the Liberty town history (1927) has Polly married to "a Sawyer" with Daniel listed as one of their children. The Sawyer family has a letter and lock of hair sent from Abigail to her daughter, wife of Daniel Sawyer of Jonesport, telling her her father has died. They have Daniel's wife listed as Mary. I believe that Polly and Mary are the same, one name being a nickname and the Polly married to Jacob L. has different parents. Need to find source of that marriage and verify names.
