Ancestors of Virtuland Richard BAGLEY

Generation No. 10

      514. Anthony Colby (Source: The Great Migration Begins.), born 09 08 1605 in Horbling, Lincolnshire, England (Source: The Great Migration Begins, Baptism date.); died 02 11 1660/61 in Salisbury, MA (Source: Martha (Bagley) Anderson and Norton Russell Bagley, Some Descendants of Orlando Bagley, Vol. 1, (1973), 2, Salisbury, Mass. Records.). He was the son of 1028. Thomas Colby and 1029. Beatrice Fulton. He married 515. Susanna (Colby) Bef. 1633 (Source: The Great Migration Begins.).

      515. Susanna (Colby), died 07 08 1689 in Salisbury, MA (Source: Martha (Bagley) Anderson and Norton Russell Bagley, Some Descendants of Orlando Bagley, Vol. 1, (1973), 2, Salisbury, Mass Records.).

Notes for Anthony Colby:
From Old Families of S & A:
Was a "planter" recd. land in the "first division," in 1640 and '43; was one of the first commoners of Amesbury. We have a map from the same book that show the "first settlement at Salisbury, Mass" that has A. Colby as a land owner. Sv (?) says he was in Boston in 1630, a church member, prob. came with Winthrop; may have been at Cambridge in 1632; freeman's oath May 14, 1634; at Ipswich in 1637. More in book p103,104 and in Geneology Dictionary.

From The Great Migration Begins:
Says other sources showing his origin as Beccles, Suffolkshire are incorrect as that Antony Colby was still in England after records show our AC was in Mass. Birth date shown is baptism record with source (?) "GMC50123".
(4 pages of info on AC and family p413 to p416.)

From Some Desc...: " Anthony was the first Colby to come to New England and was in Boston as early as 1630, as he is listed as a member of the church at that time. He was the son of Thomas and Beatrice (Felton) Colby of Playford, England and was probably of Roos Hall, Beccles, Countyof Suffolk, <differs from The Great Migration> and hence, through the female line, a descendant of six signers of the Magna Carta. He came to Masachusetts, probably in the company of Governor Winthrop, since he is called “Planter” and was of Boston, thence of Cambridge where he built the first house; then was one of the founders of Amesbury, Mass., where his house was built in 1647... Some sources believe that anthony Colby’s wife was Susanna Sargent, daughter of William Sargent, but we believe the above <maiden name Haddon> is more likely correct from evidence. <see more under notes for Susanna (Colby)>...The division of the estate of Anthony Colby of Salisbury, late deceased, made by Tho. Bradbury and Robert Pike, April 9, 1661, by order of the county court held at Salisbury ‘To ye widow for hir part & the two yongest children: to ye Sarah, ye wife of Orlando Bagley for ye which the estate was debtor 5 punds 19 shillings 8ds.’...
"Petition of Thomas Challis, Orlando Bagley, Ephraim Weed and Ebenezer Blasdell for some part of the estate of their grandfather Anthony Colby formerly of Salisbury left in the hands of their grandmother Susanna Widow of Anthony, administratrix of his estate, after Susanna Whithredg, deceased; the Court Ordered the division of the estate April 9, 1661, and it was allowed 14: 2m (Essex County Probate Records, Mass.)."

More About Anthony Colby:
Baptism: 09 08 1605

  Notes for Susanna (Colby):
From The Great Migration Begins:
Her maiden name has been given as Haddon and Sargent (assuming she is the daughter of one of Anthony's neighbors or associates in Mass.) among others but is actually not known for sure. However, this book says she was a widow at the time of her marriage to Anthony Colby- married name, Waterman. "The identy of Susannah ________ is one of the perennial mysteries of the period."

The Planters of the Commonwealth:
Lists passengers and ships of the Winthrop Fleet of 1630. Lists passengers Anthony Colby AND Mrs. Susanna Colby. Does not give where they are from as it does with others. This may indicate that she is not related to any of the Mass. associates, or her parents may have come at the same time (or even another time)--I did not check this source for Haddon's, Sargent's etc.
