Notes for George Ashley St. Clair:
Calais vital records show the wedding intentions of Ashley and Louise posted on July 24th and 30th of 1890, as well as the wedding date of Aug. 6th. The Eastport Sentinel reported the marriage and added that the wedding took place at the home of the brides father.
Ashley St. Clair was a well known and respected man in Calais. We were able to find several articles about him and Louise in the Calais Advertiser. The first was about a family reunion in 1926 shortly before Louise’s death and then a nice obituary for her. Another article on March 30, 1927 (p.7), tells about a surprise party held for Ashley’s 80th birthday. It appears he was still a judge and teacher of the Women’s Bible class of the 2nd Baptist Church (the students organized the party). He was applauded for his work in the class and for his military service.
On April 27, 1927 another article appeared congratulating him on being reappointed by Gov. Brewster as Judge of the Calais Municipal Court for his third term This article also gives his Civil War service. He enlisted at 16 in "Company E of the Second Maine Volunteer Cavalry, assigned to the Department of the Gulf, and arriving at New Orleans in 1864, the regiment saw service in the ill-fated Red River campaign..."
