Notes for James St. Clair:
From William Holman, husband of Louise E. St. Clair (Judge Ashley's daughter by first wife), in a letter to Louise's half-brother Ashley, Jr. in November 1941: "History of James St. Clair and Sally Wiggin the father and mother of Mary Smith St. Clair and Guilford Dudley St. Clair your grandfather who married Leonora Payson on Christmas day 1845. He was born in Union Maine 1824. Leonora Payson was from Camden. They lived So Hope. James St. Clair, early in life struck for the frontier landed at Owls Head Christmas Day 1803. He was a joiner by trade. The old homestead is still there and still occupied by St. Clairs and your father often visited___. James brother setttled in Freedom, ME and James bought 90 acres about 20 miles East of him on what is known today as the old St. Clair farm. George St. Clair has always wanted to buy it. It was a good farm, commanding a fine view. East was Ragged Mountain, so. east Pleasant Mountain with Meadow Mt. in the South. And Crawfords Pond, so west. Wild beasts were numerous and Mrs. St. Clair used to often shoo off the bears from out the corn.
"Mary Smith St. Clair was the daughter of James St. Clair who was born in Meredith, NH in 1777 and he married Sally Wiggin, Stratham, NH, born there in 1778, died 1868 90 years of age. Her husband James died at Owls Head 1858 and is buried in the little cemetary at the entrance to my brother Dudleys farm. They had 11 children-Mary the 2nd and your father the 11th. (Religion - they were Baptists and mentors of the church at East Union.)"
The History of Thomaston, Rockland, and South Thomaston says he was a joiner, worked on houses in Thomaston and surrounding area, was a Baptist. At the time this town history was written, 1865, his wife Sally was still alive and living in South Thomaston.
A correspondent from So. Thomaston, Malcolm Jackson, collects information on all residents since 1756. He wrote that Sally and James are buried in the Holiday Beach Cemetary, Owl's Head, ME. The tombstones show James' death as June 9, 1858, age 81 yr., 1 mo., Sarah's death, January 5, 1867, age 88 yr., 3 mo. He also says that the Courier-Gazette gives "Sarah, native of Stratham, NH, widow of the late James St. Clair, (landed at Owl's Head, in 1799), died Feb. 29, 1868, in her 90th year."
Henry Wiggin sent the death date Jan. 5, 1868, a combination of the two, his source is unknown, but much of his material comes from LDS records.
