"Samuel Howland of Dartmouth served as a private in Capt. Thomas Kempton's company of minuteman, which marched 21 April, 1775 in response to the alarm of 19 April 1775 serving five days. He was also on the list of men who marched from Dartmouth to camp under the command of Capt. Benjamin Dillingham and arrived there 15 February 1778 (Massachusetts Solders and Sailors in the War of the Revolution, [Boston, 1901, 8:408). Even though he was in his early seventies, it was probably he since there was no other Samuel Howland in Dartmouth at this time."

"Samuel4 served, in Dartmouth, for a number of years, as land deed recorder starting in 1721 and later as Justice of Peace to 1764; his name appeared on many land records during these years."
